Colorful CSS3 Animated Navigation Menu

In this short tutorial, we will be creating a colorful dropdown menu using only CSS3 and the Font Awesome icon font. An icon font is, as the name implies, a font which maps characters to icons instead of letters. This means that you get pretty vector icons in every browser which supports HTML5 custom fonts (which is practically all of them). To add icons to elements, you only need to assign a class name and the icon will be added with a :before element by the font awesome stylesheet.

Creating a Business Intelligence Dashboard with R and ASP.NET MVC: Part 3

n the first two parts of this series of articles, I set the groundwork for a solution that used ASP.NET MVC to create a simple site for a fictitious company called NorthWind Traders with a SQL Server database and which used R for the analytics and visualisation. Now, in the third part of the series, I'll build on this by introducing two new R libraries that widen the analytical power of the application that we began developing in part 1 and 2. These libraries are called lattice and googleVis.

Learning AngularJS by Example – The Customer Manager Application

I'm always tinkering around with different ideas and toward the beginning of 2013 decided to build a sample application using AngularJS that I call Customer Manager. It's not exactly the most creative name or concept, but I wanted to build something that highlighted a lot of the different features offered by AngularJS and how they could be used together to build a full-featured app. One of the goals of the application was to ensure that it was approachable by people new to Angular since I've never found overly complex applications great for learning new concepts.

12 Awesome CSS3 Features That You Can Finally Start Using

If you are like me, when you see an impressive demo of a new CSS3 feature, you can't wait to start using it in websites. Of course, then you see that it is available in only one or two of the major browsers (and this never includes IE), so ultimately you decide to wait. I have good news for you – with the latest browser releases, there are a few awesome features that are finally supported everywhere, and you can start using them right now! A word of caution – most of these features will not work in older versions of IE (9 and below). If these browsers are a large portion of your demographic, I am afraid that you will have to rely on fallbacks. But for the rest of us, here is what modern browsers have to offer:

Understanding Regular Expression matching with .test(), .match(), .exec(), .search() and .split()

RegularExpressions, often noted as RegEx or RegExp, are seen and used pretty much everywhere in JavaScript. I use them all the time and you've probably seen them out in the wild too. When you first stumble(d) across a RegExp, you probably thought the person had fallen asleep on their keyboard and pushed to production, they look crazy at first, but they are a must have in your developer toolkit.

Passing Data Between Forms

Introduction This tutorial will guide you through a few different ways to pass information between WinForms. This tutorial will NOT show you how to directly read, or change, the content of a TextBox (or any other Control) on another Form. This breaks the principle of Separation of Concerns, or encapsulation. Each form should, as far as possible, be able to function independently. They should not be reliant upon, or even know too much about, any other form. Using Modal (Dialog) Forms Using a Public Property of a Form Passing Data Using a Constructor Subscribing to FormClosing and FormClosed Events Raising, and Listening for, an Event Sharing Data - INotifyPropertyChanged This is an introduction to this subject and is...

Caching SQL Server data in ASP.NET

In nowadays, you won't find any large scale application that doesn't make use of some kind of Caching technique. Caching application data can boost application performance and of course improves User interface experience. In ASP.NET there are several kind of caching techniques such as Web Page caching or specific data caching. In other words, you can cache and serve the whole Page itself or only particular application data. Caching though can be quite tricky, considering the fact that cached data can be out of date. This is actually the biggest problem you are called to solve when using caching. In this post, we are going to see how to cache data, retrieved from an SQL Server table and how to handle certain changes on this particular table. The scenario is this: We are going to create a GridView control in a ".aspx" Page and fill this control with some data retrieved from a Customers table using a Stored Procedure. We will cache these data and every time we reload the page, a cached copy will be returned. But what if a "Customers" record is updated or a new record is inserted in this table? Well, the ideal solution would be to let SQL Server itself, instantly notify the ASP.NET Application Server that the current cached copy is out of date and let him reload a fresh copy of the records into the cache. We have just described an automated Cache reloading technique. When the client requests again the page, he will receive the updated cached copy. Let's start.

How I Went From 0 to Game with Sprite Kit in iOS 7

I decided to make a simple game that uses animation as a perk, not necessarily as the primary functionality. Enter the beloved and age old MineSweeper. The game mechanics are fairly simple; you have a grid of squares that are covered, each square can reveal a virtual bomb (game over!), a number indicating the number of bombs that touch the square, or a blank indicating there are no surrounding bombs.

2D Game Development with SpriteKit

When Apple announced iOS 7 back in June at WWDC, they also announced a number of exciting new APIs for developers. The API that caught my attention the most was SpriteKit. This is a new 2D rendering engine built primarily for game development. It allows you to compile the same code for iOS and OSX, meaning with just a few tweaks you can build a game that is available on Mac, iPad, iPod and iPhone! Combine this with the new GameController API, the rumours of a new Apple TV and the rapid level of iOS 7 adoption and you have something pretty exciting!

How To Make a Game Like Space Invaders with Sprite Kit Tutorial: Part 1

Space Invaders is one of the most important video games ever developed. Created by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978 by Taito Corporation, it earned billions of dollars in revenue. It became a cultural icon, inspiring legions of non-geeks to take up video games as a hobby. Space Invaders used to be played in big game cabinets in video arcades, chewing up our allowances one quarter at a time. When the Atari 2600 home video game console went to market, Space Invaders was the "killer app" that drove sales of Atari hardware. In this tutorial, you'll build an iOS version of Space Invaders using Sprite Kit, the 2D game framework newly introduced in iOS 7. This tutorial assumes you are familiar with the basics of Sprite Kit. If you are completely new to Sprite Kit, you should go through our Sprite Kit tutorial for beginners first. Also, you will need an iPhone or iPod Touch running iOS 7 and an Apple developer account in order to get the most out of this tutorial. That is because you will be moving the ship in this game using the accelerometer, which is not present on the iOS simulator. If you don't have an iOS 7 device or developer account, you can still complete the tutorial — you just won't be able to move your ship. Without further ado, let's get ready to blast some aliens!

Procedural Level Generation in Games Tutorial: Part 1

Most games you play have carefully designed levels that always remain the same. Experienced players know exactly what happens at any given time, when to jump and what button to press. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it does to some extent reduce the game's lifespan with a given player. Why play the same level over and over again? One way to increase your game's replay value is to allow the game to generate its content programmatically – also known as adding procedurally generated content. In this tutorial, you will learn to create tiled dungeon-like levels using an algorithm called the Drunkard Walk. You will also create a reusable Map class with several properties for controlling a level's generation. This tutorial uses Sprite Kit, a framework introduced with iOS 7. You will also need Xcode 5. If you are not already familiar with Sprite Kit, I recommend you read the Sprite Kit Tutorial for Beginners on this site. For readers who are not yet ready to switch to Sprite Kit, fear not. You can easily rewrite the code in this tutorial to use Cocos2d.

Crystal Report in ASP.net Step by Step

For business or other managerial purpose, it is very important to prepare reports. We use SAP crystal reports in asp.net often for reporting purpose. Before going to the details, I hope you already know how to prepare a crystal report (something.rpt file). Here I used SAP crystal report; data is retrieved by a stored procedure which required two parameters. I used SAP Crystal Report 13.0.5 with visual studio 2012. Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF)

The Managed Extensibility Framework or MEF is a library for creating lightweight, extensible applications. It allows application developers to discover and use extensions with no configuration required. It also lets extension developers easily encapsulate code and avoid fragile hard dependencies. MEF not only allows extensions to be reused within applications, but across applications as well.

The true power of regular expressions

As someone who frequents the PHP tag on StackOverflow I pretty often see questions about how to parse some particular aspect of HTML using regular expressions. A common reply to such a question is: You cannot parse HTML with regular expressions, because HTML isn't regular. Use an XML parser instead. This statement - in the context of the question - is somewhere between very misleading and outright wrong. What I'll try to demonstrate in this article is how powerful modern regular expressions really are.

10 Easy Steps to a Complete Understanding of SQL

Too many programmers think SQL is a bit of a beast. It is one of the few declarative languages out there, and as such, behaves in an entirely different way from imperative, object-oriented, or even functional languages (although, some say that SQL is also somewhat functional).

Introduction to the TestFlight SDK

When you want to test an app on your device, usually you plug the device into your Mac and run the Xcode project. But what if you want to install the app on many devices for testing purposes or for enterprise distribution? What if your testers are spread out around the world? Enter TestFlight, a free over-the-air platform developers can use to distribute beta and internal iOS applications to team members, and then track and manage testing and feedback using TestFlight's dashboard. In addition to distributing the app, the TestFlight SDK includes a number of useful APIs to help with your testing process. This tutorial will introduce you to TestFlight and demonstrate its APIs using a simple but fun app called MotivateMe. You will also learn how to create an ad hoc build and install it on a device using TestFlight. You should already know the basics of Objective-C and iOS development to follow along. Since you'll be building apps for distribution, you'll also need a paid developer account. Ready for take off? Let's get started!

C# Unit Testing interview questions with answers: – How can we UNIT test private methods using VSTS ?

In order to invoke private methods in VSTS unit test we have a class called as "privateobject". Create the object of "PrivateObject" class and pass the class whose private method needs to be invoked. In our case "IsNegative" is the private method which has a integer input parameter. You can then use the "PrivateObject" object to invoke the private methods / functions as shown in the below code.

iOS 7 SDK: Working with Background Fetch

Background Fetch is an awesome feature released with iOS 7. Today, we live in a social world, and most of our users have several social network apps on their mobile devices. However, every time the user opens each app, they typically must wait until the app updates to view more recent content. This can be painful if several apps and profiles are used. Now, with background fetch, all content can be automatically fetched and updated before the user loads the app.

Windows Phone 8 - A Simple Helper Class for Working with SkyDrive Files using SkyDrive API

One of the common tasks in mobile development is sharing some application files between user's devices or storing files outside device. There are many Cloud services such as Microsoft SkyDrive, DropBox, Google Disk, etc. that allow developers to use their APIs for these purposes. You may consider using a wide range of cloud services in your application and give users an opportunity to choose one to store and sync application files. This approach has some benefits and some disadvantages on the other hand. I believe if you create an application for multiple platforms (e.g. Android, Windows Phone, iOS...) you definitely should use several services for it - a user may have an account for one of them and doesn't have for others. In this situation, we probably should allow him to use the account he has and not make him register a new one although we have to support a larger codebase now.
