Working with Protobuf WCF Services

Protocol Buffers are a serialization format, developed by Google, that is fast and easy to use. Frequently referred to as "Protobuf," the technology consists of a language- and platform-neutral, extensible, binary format for fast data exchange that relies on an interface description language, which is compiled to native code. This article explains how to work with Protobuf technology. In addition, I'll show how to pair Protobuf with Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), which is Microsoft's unified programming model for building service-oriented apps. And I'll demonstrate the benefits of using Protobuf this way.

Endpoints in WCF

WCF provides communication for client applications using Endpoints. Endpoints provide the configuration required for the communication and create the complete WCF service application. So let us learn about the WCF Endpoints.

A N-Tier Architecture Sample with ASP.NET MVC3, WCF, and Entity Framework

N-Tier software architecture can solve the following client/server system issues: scalability, security, fault tolerance and etc. In our previous article "N-Tier Architecture and Tips" we introduce the basic N-Tier architecture concepts and some practical tips. In this article, we try to elaborate a N-Tier architecture sample with ASP.NET MVC3, WCF and Entity Framework. In Java, usually there is a pre-defined way to achieve the N-Tier architecture: J2EE architecture, which uses session bean over entity bean for business and persistence layer, Java bean, servlet or JSP for the client presenter layer, Java Swing, HTML or applet as the client side. Therefore, for J2EE, different application are very likely implemented in very similar ways. However, in .NET, even though there are many tools and features available, there isn't any pre-defined way as J2EE does to guard how to implement the N-Tier architecture. As a result, there are too many inconsistent and existing ways to do this. Some are good; some are bad. This article tries to introduce a decoupled, unit-testable, deployment-flexible, implementation-efficient and validation-flexible N-Tier architecture in .NET. What we achieved here is to put some well-known nice tools and features in .NET together and come up with a workable solution. Because there is too much to cover in one article, we will mainly concentrate on business and persistence layers of N-Tier architecture in our sample solution, but will still briefly touch other layers too. In order to understand better this article, we suggest you to read first our previous article on the basics of N-Tier architecture here. As our previous article, this article is also based on the assumption that a team has a full control over all layers of the N-Tier architecture.

Peer to Peer File Sharing Through WCF

The lack of resources as though computing, storing and data resources, leads to this idea that we can use the huge and infinitive resources which potentially exists in the computers of users throughout the world. For instance, we can use the computing resources of PCs which most of the time are workless, on the other hand, we can use the huge amount of data which have been stored in the computers. Moreover, we can employ these amazing resources to connect straightaway and use their data instead of connecting to a centralized server and satisfying our needs. When we want to work over the centralized architecture, some problems come to the fore and passing time makes those problems tougher and tougher, then these growing problems necessitate us to switch to the more high-powered hardware, infrastructures and the like. Consequently, we have to use higher bandwidth and stronger servers and likely super computers which cost us high-priced outlays. These problems beside the ideas for solving them resulted in a new scope of computing systems, named "Distributed systems". A Distributed system is a software system in which components located on networked computers communicate and coordinate their actions by passing messages.[1].

WCF Web HTTP Service: why and how

By definition, WCF Web HTTP programming model allows services to be exposed on non-SOAP EndPoints and helps to create WEB HTTP Services. Now a question may arise that why we need HTTP Services and what are the advantages of using that.

Northwind N-Tier Blueprint Application Using WPF/WCF/LINQ to SQL

Northwind N-Tier Blueprint is a Windows client application that can be used to manage the customers and their details of a fictitious company called Northwind Traders. This application is developed as a blueprint to showcase an enterprise standard architecture using the .NET 3.5 technologies like WPF, WCF, and LINQ to SQL. This can be used as a reference for building reliable applications with a service oriented and distributed architecture.

AutoCompleteExtender with WCF using Entity Framework

AutoCompleteExtender is an extender available in AjaxControlToolkit which can be attached to any TextBox control. When user enters a characters in TextBox which is extended by AutoCompleteExtender, AutoCompleteExtender pulls out the words that starts with the contents of the TextBox from database or specified memory location and display them in popup list. It enables ASP.NET TextBox control to behave like a search box.

Create and consume WCF Restful Service using an HttpClient

Restful Services are getting more and more popular in our days and .NET developers prefer to build them through the Web API Framework, which let's be honest it sounds right. You need to know though that WCF Framework also provides the support for building services that can be consumed over HTTP requests so you might wonder what are the differences between the two of them and which of these are the best to go with. Well, the answer is quite long and exceeds this post's scope but in my mind, Web API is used to serve data, that is you request an API controller's action to get back or post some data while WCF can be invoked in order to make different kind of operations such as heavy calculations, maybe a transaction. Anyway, this post will show you how easy is to create a WCF Restful service and consume it, either from a simple browser typing the right URL or from another application using an HttpClient.

WCF Self-Hosting multiple bindings

When building WCF Services there is this point when you have to make a critical decision: Which binding is the best for you service? Windows Communication Foundation comes with several different bindings, each of those created for specific situations and requirements. Here are some of the most used bindings with some of their characteristics as well:

WCF Hosting with Windows Service

There are several ways to host a WCF service library (IIS, Windows Service, Self Hosting), Windows Service is one of them. Windows service hosting option is suitable for a long-running WCF service hosted outside of IIS in a secure environment that is not message activated. The lifetime of the service is controlled instead by the operating system.

Hello World, Basic Server/Client Example of WCF

I want to make a very simple Server/Client application. Microsoft offers a great tool called Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) for communication between Server and Clients. I am trying to make a short introduction of WCF, but if you interested to know more, check out this link on MSDN for all details.

Writing a WCF service with NHibernat

After getting comfortable with NHibernate in the web context, I wanted to find out how easy it would be to reuse some functionality via web services. I started with the usual WCF SOAP implementation and found that no session was available. It turns out the http module that creates the session and binds it to the aspnet session context was not being called when a client requested something from the service.

Restful WCF services and queuing (MSMQ) in WCF

To demonstrate all these features we will create a sub-system that is usually part of large scale applications. This sub-system has 4 basic components. The first one will simulate an application that when a specific event happens, triggers a call to a WCF Restful service, passing some values through the query string. The second component will be the WCF Restful service, catching the information passed to it's OperationContract through the query string. The same component will write some data based on the retrieved value in a MSMQ. The third component will be another console application which will use multi-threading to read and retrieve specific messages from the previous written queue. The same component will write some data in another queue. The last component will be another WCF service, which is going to use the MsmqIntegrationBinding binding to automatically read second's queue records. I know there are a lot to be seen and create here, but I can assure you it's going to be really interesting. The system we are going to create is illustrated in the following picture.
