Telerik Data Access - Handling Connectivity Issues by Using a Backup Storage (Part 1)

In a real world scenario the loss of connection to the primary database server due to various reasons is a danger that your application may need to handle. Telerik Data Access can help you do that. Today we start a series of blog posts which will expand upon the concepts shown in our previous post to show you how to implement a SmartContext class which can help you with such scenario. The concept behind the SmartContext class is that it should allow you to work with the database in a manner very similar to how a normal instance of your model`s context would. Additionally it will have logic to automatically cache data in a backup storage and seamlessly switch to using this backup storage in case the connection to the primary database server is lost. In the first part of this series we will see how to persist the changes made by CRUD operations in a backup storage so that they would be readily available in case of a connection failure.

How to display more than one property in editable Telerik ComboBox for WPF/Silverlight

As a RadComboBox user you probably are already aware of the fact that it provides two edit modes out of the box – along with the default non-editable mode there is an editable one. The editable mode allows the user to get the desired item by typing, however it also ignores the SelectionBoxTemplate which gives you the ability to display the selected item differently. In many scenarios you might need to use both - the editable functionality and the possibility to modify the appearance of the selected item in order to visualize two or more properties of the selected custom object. This article will demonstrate how this scenario can be easily achieved by modifying the EditableTemplate of RadComboBox.

Resources to the Build Apps for Any Device with .NET Session

We wanted to thank you for attending the DevCraft Q1 2014 online conference. In our first session, "Build Apps for Any Device with .NET" we covered how the Telerik DevCraft Collection helps you build applications for any screen. From mobile to web to desktop, we have you covered. Regardless if you are starting a new project or wanting to upgrade an existing one, our control suite will allow your users to have a great experience on any device they choose. We began the session by talking about mobile and how our native controls for Windows 8/8.1 and Windows Phone 8 contain a variety of controls that will help jump start your application. We then took a look at our web controls and discovered the completeness of UI for ASP.NET AJAX and Kendo UI for MVC. We wrapped up with several desktop demos covering our new Document processing controls found in UI for WPF and RadDataEntry and Analytics integration in UI for Windows Forms. As promised, we've included a list of questions and answers from the session below. If you have any additional questions, then feel free to leave a comment below.

How to set no. of columns in Telerik’s RadDiagramToolbox?

If you are working on Silverlight and/or WPF project and using Telerik RadControls library, you might be aware of RadDiagram and RadDiagramToolbox. When you add gallery items in RadDiagramToolbox, by default it comes in three columns. In some business scenario, you might want to increase or decrease the no. of columns in the RadDiagramToolbox. Incremental loading with RadDataGrid in your Windows 8.1 XAML app

Fast and fluid experience is one of the most important characteristics of a Windows 8 application. However, when dealing with large amount of data, it is not always possible to get the entire data set downloaded and visualized in a fast and fluid manner. Such scenarios call for a more incremental (sequential) data loading approach and with our Q3 2013 release RadDataGrid makes this task easy to implement.

Building IDE with RadDocking for WPF/Silverlight

One of the key concepts when building an application stays the layout – what should it be? How should it be defined? It's a tough question with lots of different answers. Of course, Telerik always tries to make the development easier and here is our answer as simple as possible – the combination of RadMenu and RadDocking controls. Let's assume we want to build an IDE or any other multi document application. The RadDocking control is the perfect control for covering this scenario. It has built-in support for tabbed Documents, hiding Panes, floating Windows, drag and drop, activation, save/load functionality, docking compasses etc. How can we combine all these amazing features in one working application? The next screenshot shows the final result of a possible IDE implementation:

How to load 1M+ records in Teleriks ASP.NET Grid without Compromising Performance

The latest release of Telerik's ASP.NET AJAX controls (Q3 2013) shipped the so famous virtualization feature in our almighty ASP.NET DataGrid allowing you to load hundreds of thousands of records without compromising performance. Another goal for this functionality was to replace the previous Virtual Scrolling and Paging features which were a great example but did not deliver the full user experience that a virtualization mechanism could deliver.

Introducing WPF SDK Samples Browser

A couple of months ago we introduced to you the Telerik XAML SDK and we received a lot of positive feedback about it. Once we were sure that you find the new addition useful we decided to move one step further. Although GitHub is a very well-known platform we saw a better and easier approach for reviewing our examples. That is why we put some efforts in developing our brand new SDK Samples Browser. The idea behind the application was to bring a friendly way of browsing through the XAML SDK examples without any user interaction with GitHub.

5 Things I bet you didn’t know about RadControls for WPF and Silverlight

Telerik's RadControls for WPF and Silverlight has over 60 fully-featured controls, it's only natural that some gems are undiscovered. In this blog post, we will take a look at five things I bet you didn't know about RadControls for WPF or Silverlight application. 1. You can use Implicit Styles if you want to modify our XAML to provide custom themes. With Implicit styling you create a target type but not a key for your style and the style is implicitly applied to any object of that type that does not otherwise have an explicit style. Figure 1 and 2 shows an example of what the project configuration wizard looks like.

How to create a modal InsertSymbolDialog for Telerik RadRichTextBox?

If you are a Silverlight application developer and working with Telerik's RadRichTextBox control, you might have already used the InsertSymbolDialog that comes in-built with the control. This dialog provides you a direct API to insert symbols in your rich text box. By default the said dialog opens in non-modal dialog and there are no easy way to make it modal. In this blog post, we will learn how to customize it to make a modal window for that. Introduction Before starting with the customization of the InsertSymbolDialog, let me first introduce you with the RadRichTextBox control. RadRichTextBox is a control that is able to display and edit rich text content including formatted text arranged in pages, paragraphs, spans (runs), tables etc. Also it can hold images to provide a Word Document like functionality. In order to use RadRichTextBox control in your project, you will need to add a reference to the Telerik.Windows.Controls, Telerik.Windows.Data and...

Easily Play Audio and Video Files in Your ASP.NET Site with Telerik’s Media Player Control

Telerik's ASP.NET Media Player is a lightweight ajax-enabled control that will enrich your web sites and applications with extensive media capabilities. Well, HTML5 and YouTube might not be all-encompassing in terms of media formats representation, but it's not bad at all for a start and there is more coming for the next release. However, our future plans are….right, for the future, and not of topical significance at the moment, so let's focus on the present and what exactly we have at hand with this new member of Telerik's ASP.NET AJAX control suite.

How to set focus to TextBox once Telerik RadBusyIndicator stops?

Most of you have already used BusyIndicator control in your Silverlight or WPF application while communicating with server or processing a huge data. Sometime developers want to focus to a particular control like TextBox once the busyIndicator stops. I noticed in various forums that developers really suffer a lot focusing to a TextBox at the end of the processing and when the busy indication stops. Let's read the trick to resolve this. Problem Statement Let us first understand the problem statement, the solution is simple enough once you go thru this. Let us have a window with a search TextBox inside a Telerik RadBusyIndicator. When the user enter search key in the TextBox and hit search, it starts the BusyIndicator and gives a round trip to the server to search in the database. Once the service returns the data, you stop the BusyIndicator and want to place your cursor focused into the search TextBox. At a first glance, it is very easy. Isn't it? Just call the Focus()...

CloudLogin for Windows Phone implements an out-of-the-box Social Login mechanism. Facebook, LiveId and Google are supported!

One of the most common scenarios in a connected Windows Phone application is authenticating users to let them access cloud-based personal information like instant messages, feeds, to-do lists, photos, etc. Besides using your own custom authentication approach, you can also rely on OAuth 2.0 based mechanisms and authenticate your users via various Social Networks like Facebok, LiveId, Google, etc. While not so complex to implement in your Windows Phone app, an OAuth 2.0 based authentication procedure includes several steps including opening a Web Browser, navigating to the corresponding OAuth 2.0 provider page and parsing the response to get the authentication access tokens after a successful login. These steps can easily be automated and that's exactly what we do with the upgraded RadCloudLogin control released in the Q3 2013 version of RadControls for Windows Phone.
