Infinite Scroll or Endless Scroll in ASP.NET or MVC

In this quick post I will show you how to develop infinite or endless scrolling on web pages. This feature is required on websites like blog, media, e-commerce etc. If you scrolling in twitter or Facebook feed you will notice new contents loads up automatically when scroller reaches at the end of the page/document. Technically, when you reach at the end on horizontal scroll bar, it

Rendering a Partial View and JSON Data Using AJAX in ASP.Net MVC

This article explains how to render a partial view and JSON data using AJAX. I have divided this article into three sections to understand both concepts, the first section describes the basic code and structure that is common in both concepts, the second section describes how to render a partial view using AJAX and the last section describes how to render JSON data on a web using AJAX. I will explain these concepts with a simple example. The example is that books are showing in a web depending on publisher. I choose a publisher from a dropdown list then the books information is shown in the web page depending on publisher. So let's see this example in detail.

AJAX file uploader with progress notification in pure HTML5

Since the introduction of AJAX technology into the internet app development scene which allowed sending of requests to the server and updating part of a webpage without reloading the whole part, developers have taken advantage of it to write great apps. But as great as this technology is, it had a major limitation of not being able to upload files not until HTML5 with the introduction of FileReader and ArrayBuffer. Before HTML5, developers had to fake AJAX file uploads using various methods. One of the most popular being the use of iFrame embedded into the document and a JSONP response from the server loaded back into the iFrame to fake the onreadystatechange method.

How to load 1M+ records in Teleriks ASP.NET Grid without Compromising Performance

The latest release of Telerik's ASP.NET AJAX controls (Q3 2013) shipped the so famous virtualization feature in our almighty ASP.NET DataGrid allowing you to load hundreds of thousands of records without compromising performance. Another goal for this functionality was to replace the previous Virtual Scrolling and Paging features which were a great example but did not deliver the full user experience that a virtualization mechanism could deliver.

Master-detail DropDown lists and Partial Views with jQuery Ajax in MVC

Making use of jQuery Ajax calls in an ASP.NET MVC can boost application's performance. This way, you can GET or POST partial pieces of data from or to application server, without the need to send or retrieve back the entire page. This post will show you how use jQuery to load and fill a DropDown list asynchronously, with data come from the server. More over, we will see how to GET and display a partial view using the ajax method. To see all these interesting and quite useful techniques we are going to build an MVC application where the user is supposed to search for laptops. When the page is loaded for the first time, a DropDown list (Master) will be filled asynchronously with some random Manufacturers, such as "DELL" or "APPLE". Selecting one of these manufacturers will cause a new jQuery Ajax call to fill a second DropDown list (Detail) which is going to display the laptop series/categories for the respective Manufacturer. Finally, when the user picks a category from the second list, an ajax call will fetch a Partial View from the server, displaying all the available laptops according both to the selected Manufacturer and the category.

Screen scraping using YQL and AJAX

Web scraping always plays a negative role in web-development, but in some cases it is very important. jQuery is greatly helpful for cross-domain scraping and a bunch of examples are available too . Web scraping has been influenced by Yahoo Query Language(YQL). This article is going to provide a basic overview of web-scraping using jQuery and YQL. To represent data I have also used Mustache as HTML template so, I will also provide a short overview of Mustache.js here.

MVC Basic Site: Step 4 – jqGrid Integration in MVC 4.0 using AJAX, JSON, jQuery, LINQ, and Serialization

MVC Basic Site is intended to be a series of tutorial articles about the creation of a basic and extendable web site that uses ASP.NET MVC. The first article from this series, named MVC Basic Site: Step1-Multilingual Site Skeleton, was focused mainly on the creation of a multilingual website skeleton by using ASP.NET MVC. Also the user authentication and registration created from scratch was described there. The second article, MVC Basic Site: Step2-Exceptions Management, presents in details the exceptions management rules and their implementation for an ASP.NET MVC website, and provides some utility base classes and source code for Logging and Exceptions Management that can be reused (with very small changes) not only in other ASP.NET sites but also generally in any .NET project. The third article, MVC Basic Site: Step3-Dynamic Layouts and Site Admin with: AJAX, jqGrid, Controller Extensions, HTML Helpers and more, provides the implementation of dynamic layouts and website administration by using AJAX, jqGrid, Custom Action Results, Controller Extension, HTML Helpers, and other utility C# source code and JavaScript that can be extended and reused in other projects. This article is the fourth in the MVC Basic Site series, and presents in detail jqGrid integration in MVC 4.0 by using AJAX, JSON, jQuery, LINQ, and Serialization.

Ajax and jQuery in ASP.NET MVC

Using jQuery and Ajax asynchronous calls can improve your web application's performance dramatically. Ajax calls, request and retrieve only partial data giving the user a sense of a better interactive user interface experience. This post will show you how to use jQuery and retrieve data through Ajax calls. Ajax will target controller's actions methods which in turn, will return a partial view or even JSON data (we will see JSON in later post, that's for sure). If you aren't familiar how actions can return partial views, you can read this post. So let's start creating our MVC application.

Alternate Rendering Tricks for Mobile Websites with ASP.Net and AJAX Controls

If you have a smartphone like an iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, or Nokia Lumia you know the problem with the mobile web. Some web developer with a hi-definition display designed their site with 10pt font targeting a browser with a minimum resolution of 1920x1200. The mobile web browser cannot handle that resolution and compensates by scaling the content. Consequently, we have links that are so small you need a magnifying glass to see them, let alone click them.

MVC Basic Site is developing by using an incremental and iterative methodology, this means that each new step adds more functionalities to the solution from the previous step, so the source code provided for download in this article contains all functionalities implemented until now (from all articles). The layouts of the web sites normally include header, menus and footer. Note that these layouts are static for majority of the web sites.

What’s new in RadHtmlChart in the Q1 2013 Release of RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX

Usually a series must be easily identifiable through its colour, so a simple property that sets it should suffice. This is what we thought initially. It turned out that in many cases a certain item from a Bar series would need to be red, for example, while the rest of the series is green. This worked out of the box for Pie charts, but that's the point of pie charts – each item having custom color, name, value, which are usually attributes for the entire series in all other chart types.

Ajax.ActionLink and Html.ActionLink in MVC

In this post you will learn use of Ajax.ActionLink helper and Html.ActionLink. I will compare both to show you how it is different. Okay, let's begin with Html.ActionLink. Html.ActionLink Html.ActionLink is used to create hyperlink on view page and user clicks it to navigate to new URL. It does not link to a view directly rather it links to a controller's action. AJAX for Beginners - Understanding ASP.NET AJAX Server Controls

Desktop applications and web applications have one major difference and that is the stateless nature of web applications. A website runs on a client and communicates with a server in a stateless manner. So every action taken by the user on his browser has to be propagated back to the web server to determine the outcome of that action. Due to this required postback to the server, web applications find it very difficult to achieve a high degree of responsiveness in terms of user interface and functionality (something that desktop applications manage quite easily).

AJAX, i.e., Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, is the technique that can be used to have communication between the client and server without needing a postback. The benefit of avoiding postback is faster response to the user, the page in the browser is not changed/refreshed/posted so the user can continue to use it while data is sent to the server and user actions like keypresses can also be communicated to the server to provide more meaningful results (example: autosuggest), i.e., enhanced overall usability of the web application.
