LINQ Tutorial for Beginners

LINQ is Microsoft's technology to provide a language-level support mechanism for querying data of all types. These types include in memory arrays and collections, databases, XML documents and more, since version 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008. (.NET 4 and Visual Studio 2010 added support for the Parallel LINQ features).

LINQ to SQL : CRUD operations and Stored procedures

The fundamentals operations that a storage system provides are the CRUD ones. CRUD stands for CREATE, READ, UPDATE, DELETE and corresponds to the SQL statements INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE and DELETE respectively. This post will show you how to query CRUD operations with LINQ to SQL and how to call a stored procedure defined in your SQL Server, as well. In a previous post we have seen how to create your entity model for your LINQ to SQL engine, in other words how to map your entity classes to your database tables. It is really important to know how to create and map your own entities but in most cases you might want to rely on particular tools which help you accomplish this task. Be aware that writing mapping information by hand can be time consuming and error-prone. In this post, we will use the SqlMetal.exe tool to generate the Northwind database entities. Then, we 'll use these entities in our project to query CRUD operations. Let's start.

LINQ to SQL : Data Modeling – Inheritance – Relationships

LINQ to SQL is a LINQ implementation which can be used to query relational Microsoft SQL Server database, in an object oriented way. You can create an object model (classes) that maps your relational database tables, then query against this model using LINQ to SQL queries, which are eventually converted to the respective SQL native queries in a database level by the LINQ to SQL engine. If you are new to LINQ you can read the LINQ Basics post or the LINQ To Objects one, to get an idea. Before start writing LINQ to SQL queries, you need to define your entity model and map it to a relational database. Hence, the first thing I am gonna show you is how to create and configure your Entities in LINQ to SQL. Let's start. Read more of this post

LINQ to Objects queries

In previous post we saw the fundamentals around querying data using LINQ . There are three basic LINQ implementations and this post will give you code examples for the main implementation of the Microsoft Language Integrated Query, LINQ to Objects. In later posts we will also see the LINQ to SQL and LINQ to Entities implementations. To run the following code simply create a C# console application in Visual Studio. We are going to use only the Program.cs file. Before starting writing our queries, we 'll create our classes and variables which are going to hold our objects for LINQ queries. Create the "Customer", "Order", "Product" classes and finally add an enumeration to hold the customer's countries. You can place them above the Program class, under the same namespace.

LINQ queries Basics

As a developer you must learn that knowing to manipulate data in your applications is a must. There are several different techniques to access data sources such as XML files, text files, excel files, databases etc, and LINQ is one of them. These series of posts will give you code examples showing how to use LINQ to Objects, LINQ to SQL and finally LINQ to Entities. I will not write anything about how LINQ works behind the scenes but instead I am going to give practical examples so you can use similar in your applications. Let's start. All you 'll need to run the following code is a console application. So create one and open the Program.cs file.

Joins and Left Outer Joins in LINQ

Even for simple projects, I like to use LightSwitch for what I call Back Room screens because it's just so darn convenient. You'll see what I mean later, because these first two tables are so primitive, so uncouth, so crude that I don't even call them tables – LightSwitch will attach to them but only as read-only. I call them MasterRowPile and ChildRowPile LightSwitch, as you will see, wants little to do with them because they have no primary keys. Brace yourselves, they are hideous to behold.

LINQ to Entities: Basic Concepts and Features

In the previous article (Introducing LINQ—Language Integrated Query), we learned the new features of C# 3.0 including LINQ. In this article and the next, we will see how to use LINQ to query a database, or in other words, how to use LINQ toEntities in C#. After reading these two articles, you will have a good understanding of LINQ to Entities, so that you can write the data access layer of your WCF service with LINQ to Entities, to securely, and reliably communicate with the underlying database.

What is the difference between “LINQ to Entities”, “LINQ to SQL” and “LINQ to Dataset”

Here we will see what is the difference between "LINQ to Entities", "LINQ to SQL" and "LINQ to Dataset"?

All of them are LINQ - Language Integrated Query - so they all share a lot of commonality. All these "dialects" basically allow you to do a query-style select of data, from various sources.

Linq-to-SQL is Microsoft's first attempt at an ORM - Object-Relational Mapper. It supports SQL Server only. It's a mapping technology to map SQL Server database tables to .NET objects.

Linq-to-Entities is the same idea, but using Entity Framework in the background, as the ORM - again from Microsoft, but supporting multiple database backends

Linq-to-DataSets is LINQ, but using is against the "old-style" ADO.NET 2.0 DataSets - in the times before ORM's from Microsoft, all you could do with ADO.NET was returning DataSets, DataTables etc., and Linq-to-DataSets queries those data stores for data. So in this case, you'd return a DataTable or DataSets (System.Data namespace) from a database backend, and then query those using the LINQ syntax

LinQ Extended Joins

The very first time that I was interested by LinQ, there in 2007, apart from the great admiration for the product and the whole range of possibilities that it was before me, there was something that I really missed something that, for a SQL developer with a "wide" range of acknowledge, was difficult to understand about the new philosophy for queries over objects. It was nothing more than the absence of many of the SQL joins advanced sentences within the LinQ basis class extensive methods.
At the beginning I assumed that the problem was a matter of time for the Microsoft Developer team and that it will be fixed in the next versions. But, the more deep I analysed the product the more I realized that maybe it was not the better way to work for an object oriented developer and that it was needed to leave apart the solutions given for a database proffesional worker since they may be useful for them but not so valid for us. This was remarked even more at the time I knew about Entity Framework browsing  properties.
To this day, I learnt that anything is black or white but the main point is to be useful, that some solutions do not fit 100% with the pureness of the development premises but they are very handy and save time and money, which is essential in the daily work for a great developer. We can find some examples of it within the Framework (Extensive methods, anonymous types, dynamics, etc)
