Windows 8: Scheduled Tasks & the Lock Screen

Some developers need to run code when apps are not running. For this, there is the background task. These are periodic and have constrained CPU and Network usage.

There are two types of background tasks: standard and lock screen tasks. There can be only 7 lock screen tasks, and the key difference is the constraint thresholds.

Types of Constructor in .Net

Constructor is nothing but a function (with the same name as Class) and is used for initializing the members of a class whenever an class object is created. You can initialize the members with any value (as per member datatype) or with the default values through constructor.

If a class is not defined with the constructor then the CLR (Common Language Runtime) will provide an implicit constructor which is called as Default Constructor.
A class can have any number of constructors provided they vary with the number of arguments that are passed, which is they should have different signatures.

Some of the basic properties of Constructor are :
a. Constructors do not return a value.
b. Constructors can be overloaded.
c. If a class is defined with static and Non-static constructors then the privilege will be given to the Non-static constructors.

Tips and Tricks for C# WP8 Developer

As an experienced developer, you do not have bug. Never. At least on your computer. And when sometimes (so rarely that you can barely remember) a bug appears, it is never on your computer.

And in this case, it is a true hell to find at least where in your application the bug is (because as you never have bugs, you do not need to integrate an error log system).

The first solution can be to decline the responsibility with a "It works for me, you should have a problem with your drivers".

Passwords & Secrets (Encryption & Observable Collections)

Passwords & Secrets is a notepad-style app that you can protect with a master password. Therefore, it's a great app for storing a variety of passwords and other secrets that you don't want getting into the wrong hands. The note-taking functionality is top-notch, supporting

Auto-save, which makes jotting down notes fast and easy
Quick previews of each note
The ability to customize each note's background/foreground colors and text size
The ability to email your notes

On top of this, the data in each note is encrypted with 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption to keep prying eyes from discovering the data. This encryption is done based on the master password, so it's important that the user never forgets their password! There is no way for the app to retrieve the data without it, as the app does not store the password for security reasons.

A Beginner's Tutorial on String Comparison in C#

Usually in our applications when we want to compare two strings we use the equality operator. Under most scenarios this will work properly but still we should know what are the other ways we can do string comparisons and perhaps achieve better performance and results. So lets say I have a variable str and I want to check whether its value is equal to "Yes" or not.

Func and Action Delegates

The .Net Framework 3.5 has introduced two sets of System-Defined Delegates named Func andAction. Action<> and Func<> are extremely useful tools for reducing duplication in code and decreasing coupling. The Func Delegate encapsulates a method that accepts between zero and four arguments and returns a value. The Action Delegate encapsulates a method that accepts between zero to four parameters and does not return a value i.e. Action delegates differ from Func in that the method must returns void.

How to Fix Windows 8 RTM Activation Issue?

After installing Windows 8 RTM, I was facing an issue that says "Windows can't activate right now. Try activating Windows later". I tried it multiple times but couldn't figure out what was the actual issue here. Later @LBugnion shared me the trick to resolve this issue which I am going to share here in my blog, so that you can find it useful. After installing Windows 8 RTM, you may probably face an issue while activating your Windows OS which will say the following: Windows can't activate right now. Try activating Windows later. If this issue persists, contact your system administrator or technical support department for assistance. If you are one of them, no need to worry. Just follow the below mentioned steps: Open "Command Prompt" under Administrative Privileges. Enter the following in the Console Window: slmgr.vbs -ipk [PRODUCT_KEY] and then hit enter. Replace "[PRODUCT_KEY]" with your genuine Windows 8 Product Key that you received. Once you are done with the...

8 Great WP8 Features We Now Know

Windows Phone 7 was Microsoft's closely guarded secret; Windows Phone 8, however, has been the least guarded one. A while back, a video for hardware partners showed Joe Belfiore talking about some of the upcoming features; last week, the SDK leaked. The software development kit for WP8 has been a treasure trove for enthusiasts and everyone have been going through documents to unearth new features.

Windows 8 Metro: Add settings to your application

Almost every application you write needs to expose an user interface that let the user change the configuration. In common desktop applications these settings go under a preferences section, usually available from a menu item, but for sure it is not true for all the applications, so every time you install a new software you have to rely on a manual and search a place where this configuration has been placed.

As for other features, in metro-style application this now goes under a very strict guideline checked as a strong requirement by the certification team. One thing you need to be aware is that the settings contract is used not only to expose user preferences but also is a place where you have to move your licensing terms, about and other things that are not exactly settings, in the common feel of the term.

SEO for WP Marketplace

After my first windows phone application jOS went live I was really worried about the prospects of anyone finding my application in the relevant searches. I realised that it was difficult to find and reasons were that the keywords were not chosen carefully. I then started dissecting the marketplace search algorithm by profiling the search facility and decided to share my findings with the rest of you so that those publishing for the first time do not get frustrated.

Creating beautiful views for local files in Window 8

Part of Metro style design is building clean views that allow content to shine and help users accomplish their tasks. We explore in particular how you can create beautiful galleries with content from user's files and folders on the local file system. Being able to display local content is a key requirement for many gallery apps that let users browse and consume their content – photos, videos, music, or documents. Windows 8 provides tools to do this in a simple, efficient, and customizable way.

Hardware accelerating everything: Windows 8 graphics

In computer graphics, high performance is a guiding principle. In the early days of personal computing, discrete, add-on graphics cards were mostly focused on specialized applications such as CAD/CAM and gaming. Even early on, there was a view that all of this graphics horsepower could be used for more: notably a better user interface and experience. One of the first graphics cards for a PC was called a "Windows Accelerator" from S3 Graphics, which focused on the user experience by moving windows around the screen faster. As graphics hardware evolved, so, too, did the methods that developers use to interact with that hardware.

You are the controller – a step in to WP7 -> Win8 networking

I couldn't resist, I should be working on my Windows 8 Port of Flipped (which seems to be going swimmingly) and finishing of some other projects but glamour got the better of me as I rolled out of the covers and here we are.

One of my age old dreams with game development (even prior to XNA) was to be able to pick up my mobile device and use it as an alternate display or additional controller, at the time it was my trusty Windows Mobile PPC, times have evolved but my vision is still fresh.

Positioning Popup Menus in Windows 8 Metro

Often when building Windows 8 apps you'll want to provide a menu of options from the app bar, this may be a list of different ways to sort or filter the data. For these simple menus WinRT provides the PopupMenu control (for more complicated popup user interfaces I recommend the Flyout control from the Callisto library), these menus are very easy to create by creating UI Commands and appending them to the menus Commands collection.

Ultimate WP About Dialog

What does your app say about you as a developer? The app about page establishes your reputation in the eyes of the app user. It is as important as your interview attire. As you wouldn't wear flip-flops to an interview, you would also not want to have a poorly designed about page in your app.

About page is a great way to show your professionalism in a pretty and engaging way. Furthermore, It also provides an opportunity for you to advertise your other apps.
