Getting Started with your first Win8 HTML app using RadControls – Part 2

In our Getting Start with Win8 HTML RadControls Part 1 post, I drilled into the different templates available for creating Windows 8 HTML apps, detailed adding the RadControls for Windows 8 HTML to an existing project, and used the Telerik supplied template to create a new Windows 8 HTML navigation app configured with the RadControls. Now it's time to sling some code!

How to Install .NET Framework 3.5 in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1?

It was not as smooth as I thought while installing the Windows 8.1 as a fresh OS in my laptop. Though the OS and other major software installation was smooth, but I faced lots of issues while installing some software's that need .NET Framework 3.5. Did lots of analysis, tried various methods to install the framework but all failed. At the end I got an perfect solution which resolved the problem. Thought to share in case you faced similar, will help you. Issue As I formatted my hard drive and installed Windows 8.1 Preview as a fresh operating system, my system was completely blank and I had to install all the other softwares one by one. This is really a hectic job but it should not be that much problematic if the Windows installation provided me the .NET Framework 3.5 by default. Writing a Win8 App with VisualStudio and TFS

A lot of people ask me how they can write a Windows 8 App with Visual Studio and Team Foundation Service (our online, hosted version of Team Foundation Server). In fact, I was talking with a friend recently whom I used to code with about 10 years ago. It had been a long time since he programmed with C# (nearly 10 years?) as he now spends most of his time programming low level driver code. He challenged me with how fast a "new" developer could get started with writing a Windows 8 App. He set the challenge asking if a new developer could get started in under 1 day. Challenge accepted. Challenge accomplished. Here is my journey through documenting how a new developer can get started with Windows 8 application development using Visual Studio & Team Foundation Service.

Local Data Store in Windows 8

Windows 8 programming is very powerful, but Microsoft does not have a good story for local storage. The best they have to offer for local relational databases is to recommend using SQLite. Telerik has stepped into this breach to offer a Local Data Storage solution.

Getting Started with Telerik’s RadNumericBox for Win8 XAML

Numeric control is not new and all of us already experienced it in various applications and websites. Telerik also has this control in all of their control libraries but was missing in Windows 8 for XAML library. Recently they announced the beta release of 2013.Q2 for Windows 8. In this post, we will start with this new control that's first introduced with Q2 2013 release of Telerik's RadControls for Windows 8 XAML and find out the common properties a developer needs.

A Windows 8 App - From Idea to Store in 8 Hours

I had an idea for a simple Windows Store app, so I thought I'd develop it but keep track of how long it took me and what I spent my time on. The total time spent working on the app was 8 hours and 10 minutes, this included: sketching ideas and feature possibilities, developing the app, creating icons and promo images, and submitting to the Windows Store. To set the scene: the app was written in C# and XAML (which I'm reasonably fluent in) and I've already built a few apps for the Windows Store and a couple of Windows Phone apps.

Windows 8 XAML Tips - Master Pages

Besides Windows Phone and Windows 8 apps I develop Web sites using ASP.NET. In ASP.NET Web Forms you can define a MasterPage. This technique is called Layout pages in ASP.NET MVC. A simular technique can also be used in your Windows Store apps using XAML. In this blog I will explain how.

Notifications and Background Tasks in Windows 8 Store Apps

Windows 8 Store apps are meant to be geared for an always connected world where our apps are constantly connected (to the internet) and have updates ready for us whenever they are available. Towards this, Windows 8 Store apps have support for a robust Notifications framework that can tell users about updates in various forms like "Toast Notifications", "Live Tile Updates" and "Lock Screen Updates". Today we will see how to use these notification types and also the programmatic APIs that we need to use to make best use of the notifications framework.

How to disable the On-Screen Touch Keyboard in Windows 8

It's lovely, isn't it. It's the Windows 8 on-screen keyboard, except I don't need or want to see it. I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch and it already has a keyboard. I will never ever want to use the Windows 8 touch keyboard. Unfortunately there is no checkbox or "just turn it off" way to disable the keyboard with a supported option.

Tips for dual-booting Windows 8 on Mac

Years of supporting numerous commercial users provide hard-knock, real-life lessons valuable to understanding how businesses really operate. Years of technology consulting also reveal how business users truly equip and interact with computers versus how they might wish to believe they equip and interact with desktops and laptops. Over time, and by working directly with business users operating Macs, I've learned its best to keep computer configurations as absolutely simple as possible. While technology professionals typically have no trouble keeping numerous logins straight-such as is often required for logging in to local computers, cloud-based apps, Web consoles, email platforms, CRM tools, ERP programs, EMR software, terminal services sessions, accounting solutions and more-even that simple task can prove overly complex and burdensome to end users.

Introducing the RadGrid for Windows 8 HTML

Windows 8 comes with a ListView control that does a nice job of providing a customizable list of values.  But often in data intensive applications, what would really hit the spot is a true data grid. ListViews do not allow commonly used data tasks such as sorting, grouping, and filtering, just to name a few.  Fortunately, Telerik has provided on for both HTML and XAML.  In this post, I am going to change the Event List home page for Conference Buddy  from a ListView to a Telerik RadGrid in just a few easy steps.

Want to understand more about the deployment of Windows 8 Apps?

Windows RT management requires Windows Intune (which links to Configuration Manager) – you can then sideload or deeplink windows 8 apps. For RT the Company Apps component is built in, so no additional client software is needed. The management interface for Windows Intune does need Silverlight, so you need to do it from a Windows 8 device and not RT. For Windows RT "sideloading apps" a key which must be bought in batches of 100 at $30 each, you will also need to have signed the app with a cert trusted by the device and also a Windows Intune subscription at £ per device.

Windows 8 Storing Data With SQLite

In a previous blog post, I showed the repository pattern with local or remote data storage. In this blog post, based in part on work done for my upcoming book Pro Windows 8 With C# and XAML by Jesse Liberty and Jon Galloway, we're going to explore storing data using Sqlite. To use SQLite you will need to add the SQLite Visual Studio Extension. To do so, open VS and go to Tools->Extensions and Updates. Click on Online and in the search type SQLite for windows runtime. When it comes up click download, it will install the extension.

Modern (“Metro”) Style Icons for WP and Win8

When building a Windows Phone or Windows Store app, one of the key things you might need are icons for your application bars (or other buttons); there are some good places to get different sets of icons from, including Syncfusion's Metro Studio, but there is one place I like to get my icons from for both types of projects. The Solution I've found the place to get a huge selection of different icons is from modernuiicons.com, a website run by Austin Andrews (@templarian), which, at time of writing this, has nearly 1000 icons that can be used. Now if the choice of icons alone isn't enough to sway you, then how about this: when you download the icon pack, you not only get light and dark png versions of each icon, you also get a .design (Expression Design) file and a .xaml file of the same icons. Where might this be useful?
