The Web API Checklist — 43 Things To Think About When Designing, Testing, and Releasing your API

When you're designing, testing, or releasing a new Web API, you're building a new system on top of an existing complex and sophisticated system. At a minimum, you're building upon HTTP, which is built upon TCP/IP, which is built upon a series of tubes. You're also building upon a web server, an application framework, and maybe an API framework. Most people, myself included, are not aware of all the intricacies and nuances of every component they're building upon. Even if you deeply understand each component, it's probably going to be too much information to hold in your head at one time.

ASP.NET Web API GZip compression ActionFilter with 8 lines of code

If you are building high performance applications that consumes WebAPI, you often need to enable GZip / Deflate compression on Web API. Compression is an easy way to reduce the size of packages and in the same time increase the speed of communication between client and server. Two common algorithms used to perform this on the Web are GZip and Deflate. These two algorithms are recognized by all web browsers and all GZip and Deflate HTTP responses are automatically decompressed.

MEASURE PERFORMANCE OF ASP.NET WEB APPLICATIONS WITH MICROSOFT PERFORMANCE MONITOR

This article gives a short introduction in performance measurement of Asp.Net web applications with the Microsoft Performance Monitor (perfmon.exe). The goal is to visualize and measure incoming traffic and to find performance bottlenecks using Microsoft tools. This post shows how to use the Microsoft Performance Monitor, also known as perfmon. A small Asp.Net web application and a client application will be created. With both applications on board, perfmon is used to measure the traffic between the client and the web application.

IMPROVE SERVER PERFORMANCE WITH ASYNCHRONOUS WEBAPI

In this article I want to show, how you can improve server performance dramatically by using Microsoft asynchronous WebAPI. The text shows, how a Microsoft WebAPI service backend can be improved to handle request asynchronously and so to increase the number of concurrent clients the server can handle. You can boost the user experience of client applications with asynchronous WebAPI services by being more reactive and fluent in the user interface. This document will not describe the client side in deep, focus is on the performance of the server side. In the following section, I write a very simple web service using Microsoft WebAPI, measure the performance of concurrent requests to that service and compare the results to a second scenario, where we will make the service asynchronous.
