SSIS - What Is The Difference Between Control Flow and Data Flow In SSIS ?

Control Flow is part of SQL Server Integration Services Package where you handle the flow of operations or Tasks. Let's say you are reading a text file by using Data Flow task from a folder. If Data Flow Task completes successfully then you want to Run File System Task to move the file from Source Folder to Archive Folder. If Data Flow Task failed then you want to send email to your users by using Send Mail Task. The Precedence Constraints are used to control the execution flow.

SSIS #116–What is the variable value at runtime?

Using variables in SSIS packages can make your ETL process more dynamic and respond to different scenarios during runtime. Not only we can use variables, we also have many different ways to set values for our variables. This is all good news for developers. But like many things in real life, when we have too many choices, we can get carried away and overcome by our enthusiasm. This is especially true in terms of variables in SSIS packages.

Unit Testing SQL Server OLAP Cubes Using C#

I feel a little like Thomas Jefferson when I say, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all code has certain unalienable rights and that among these rights is the ability to be thoroughly unit tested in a simple and concise way so bugs can be easily identified and production outages minimized." A bit dramatic, yes, but it gets my point across. Of course, most developers believe their code should be unit tested, but what happens when the definition of "code" is blurred? This was the situation I found myself in recently when presented with a complicated issue and tasked to find a solution. A group of developers was involved with writing a complex online analytical processing (OLAP) cube using SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). This cube had numerous dimensions all tied to an extremely complex fact table. Because the developers were quite skilled at developing cubes, they were able to piece the cube together, but validating the results of their Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) queries was a daunting task. The difficulty was compounded by a number of factors, including the amount of data in the dimensions and fact table, as well as the time and computing resources needed to build the cube. Once the cube was built, the results (produced by MDX queries) were sent to the users. If the users found an issue with the data, it would take a long time to track the problem down. Also, once the underlying problem was discovered and fixed, the cube would need to be regenerated. To make matters worse, if dimensions were added, the underlying fact table was updated or the cube was built using different aggregations, there was no way to determine the full effects of these changes. A seemingly innocent change could have a far-reaching and cascading effect on queries to the cube.

Caching SQL Server data in ASP.NET

In nowadays, you won't find any large scale application that doesn't make use of some kind of Caching technique. Caching application data can boost application performance and of course improves User interface experience. In ASP.NET there are several kind of caching techniques such as Web Page caching or specific data caching. In other words, you can cache and serve the whole Page itself or only particular application data. Caching though can be quite tricky, considering the fact that cached data can be out of date. This is actually the biggest problem you are called to solve when using caching. In this post, we are going to see how to cache data, retrieved from an SQL Server table and how to handle certain changes on this particular table. The scenario is this: We are going to create a GridView control in a ".aspx" Page and fill this control with some data retrieved from a Customers table using a Stored Procedure. We will cache these data and every time we reload the page, a cached copy will be returned. But what if a "Customers" record is updated or a new record is inserted in this table? Well, the ideal solution would be to let SQL Server itself, instantly notify the ASP.NET Application Server that the current cached copy is out of date and let him reload a fresh copy of the records into the cache. We have just described an automated Cache reloading technique. When the client requests again the page, he will receive the updated cached copy. Let's start.

MS SQL Server : Rowversion: Version Stamping A Row

Very often while working with data, our requirement is to retrieve which data has been modified and keep the data in two tables synchronized. For achieving this task, SQL Server has provided many ways such as CDC (Change Data Capture), rowversion datatype, MERGE statement and various other alternatives using such as joins, storing datetime, etc., which can be used based on our requirement.
