Investigating ASP.Net Memory Dumps for Idiots (like Me)

Sometimes your ASP.Net sites crash or hang, and you have no idea why. No exceptions, no event logs. This leaves you a little light on places to start your debug investigation journey. Microsoft Developers who live a little closer to the metal (i.e. non web developers) will know of tools like WinDbg, but for web developers these tools can seem a little scary/low level. This post is aimed at allowing you to get a closer view on your ASP.Net website at the time of a failure, without any of complexity of learning WinDbg on your own.

Continuous Integration for iOS Development

When developing iOS apps a number of things are required for producing a quality product. These include the ability to run unit tests on the code and to test the user interface automatically. We can set up Continuous Integration (CI) to complete these tests for us. If all tests are passed then we automatically upload to Hockeyapp for our testers to download. In this blogpost I'll take you through the process of setting up a CI pipeline for iOS. We built a very simple app called 'Tasky' which pretty much does as little as possible but enough to be able to build a complete workflow. We wanted an app with a bit of navigation and Core Data to give us enough to test.

SSIS - What Is The Difference Between Control Flow and Data Flow In SSIS ?

Control Flow is part of SQL Server Integration Services Package where you handle the flow of operations or Tasks. Let's say you are reading a text file by using Data Flow task from a folder. If Data Flow Task completes successfully then you want to Run File System Task to move the file from Source Folder to Archive Folder. If Data Flow Task failed then you want to send email to your users by using Send Mail Task. The Precedence Constraints are used to control the execution flow.

Resources to the Build Apps for Any Device with .NET Session

We wanted to thank you for attending the DevCraft Q1 2014 online conference. In our first session, "Build Apps for Any Device with .NET" we covered how the Telerik DevCraft Collection helps you build applications for any screen. From mobile to web to desktop, we have you covered. Regardless if you are starting a new project or wanting to upgrade an existing one, our control suite will allow your users to have a great experience on any device they choose. We began the session by talking about mobile and how our native controls for Windows 8/8.1 and Windows Phone 8 contain a variety of controls that will help jump start your application. We then took a look at our web controls and discovered the completeness of UI for ASP.NET AJAX and Kendo UI for MVC. We wrapped up with several desktop demos covering our new Document processing controls found in UI for WPF and RadDataEntry and Analytics integration in UI for Windows Forms. As promised, we've included a list of questions and answers from the session below. If you have any additional questions, then feel free to leave a comment below.

A Case Study of an Android* Client App Using Cloud-Based Alert Service

This case study focused on developing an Android client app for a cloud-based healthcare alert service. A doctor or a nurse would have this client app installed on an Android device. The hospital's central paging system sends short notification messages to the device. The notification plays an alert sound and shows up on the device's status bar. The user acknowledges or responds to the alert. The user could also browse all the outstanding alerts and the history. The use case was very generic; it could be easily applied to other industries.

Peer to Peer File Sharing Through WCF

The lack of resources as though computing, storing and data resources, leads to this idea that we can use the huge and infinitive resources which potentially exists in the computers of users throughout the world. For instance, we can use the computing resources of PCs which most of the time are workless, on the other hand, we can use the huge amount of data which have been stored in the computers. Moreover, we can employ these amazing resources to connect straightaway and use their data instead of connecting to a centralized server and satisfying our needs. When we want to work over the centralized architecture, some problems come to the fore and passing time makes those problems tougher and tougher, then these growing problems necessitate us to switch to the more high-powered hardware, infrastructures and the like. Consequently, we have to use higher bandwidth and stronger servers and likely super computers which cost us high-priced outlays. These problems beside the ideas for solving them resulted in a new scope of computing systems, named "Distributed systems". A Distributed system is a software system in which components located on networked computers communicate and coordinate their actions by passing messages.[1].

Using Azure Mobile Services to Create a Game Leaderboard in Minutes

Leaderboards have long been a staple of many games, driving the competitive spirit while often, back in the day, forcing people to get creative with the limited three spaces they had to come up with a name that was both witty and inevitabely borderline inappropriate. A basic leaderboard is quite simple to create as the only info being stored typically is a user name and the score and doesn't require complex management- " Bob" could hold all the slots for the top 10 scores for example. Typically, two server side calls are all that is needed to store and retrieve leaderboard information : one to get the top scores and names, and a second to save a score entry. In the past, I might have picked my favorite server side language (likely PHP just because it would have been quick and dirty ) , created a database, and then write a few services / logic to retrieve and save the data. Then I could have called that service from my HTML/JS application. I'm going to show you how to take advantage of Azure Mobile Services using JavaScript to create a quick leaderboard api with a cloud backend, without needing to write any server side code. You can write your client side or application logic that will consume the services in almost anything your little heart desires including Objective-C or Java, but for this tutorial I am going to show you how to do this in JS.

Talking Web Pages and the Speech Synthesis API

A few weeks ago, I briefly discussed NLP and its related technologies. When dealing with natural language, there are two different, yet complementary, aspects to consider: Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS). In the article Introducing the Web Speech API, I discussed the Web Speech API, an API to provide speech input and text-to-speech output features in a web browser. You may have noticed that I only presented how to implement the speech recognition in a website, not the speech synthesis. In this article, we'll fill the gap describing the Speech Synthesis API.

Using the Accelerometer on Android

Before the dawn of smartphones, one of the few hardware components applications could interact with was the keyboard. But times have changed and interacting with hardware components is becoming more and more common. Using gestures often feels more natural than interacting with a user interface through mouse and keyboard. This is especially true for touch devices, such as smartphones and tablets. I find that using gestures can bring an Android application to life, making it more interesting and exciting for the user. In this tutorial, we'll use a gesture that you find in quite a few mobile applications, the shake gesture. We'll use the shake gesture to randomly generate six Lottery numbers and display them on the screen using a pretty animation.

Android SDK: Working with Android Studio

The goal of this series is to learn about Android development, including the tools and resources you need to in order to start creating apps. In the last part we became acquainted with the Eclipse IDE. Since the platform began, Eclipse has been the main supported development environment used to create Android apps. Eclipse is still the recommended IDE for Android, but this is set to change with the new Android Studio IDE. Android Studio is not yet complete, but it is available as an early access preview. This new IDE is designed specifically for Android development and based on IntelliJ IDEA in conjunction with JetBrains. When it is complete, Android Studio will improve several aspects of its Android development, not the least of which is the process of designing UIs to support the range of Android devices in use. In this tutorial we will install and explore Android Studio.

Rendering a Partial View and JSON Data Using AJAX in ASP.Net MVC

This article explains how to render a partial view and JSON data using AJAX. I have divided this article into three sections to understand both concepts, the first section describes the basic code and structure that is common in both concepts, the second section describes how to render a partial view using AJAX and the last section describes how to render JSON data on a web using AJAX. I will explain these concepts with a simple example. The example is that books are showing in a web depending on publisher. I choose a publisher from a dropdown list then the books information is shown in the web page depending on publisher. So let's see this example in detail.

Performance Tips for Android’s ListView

I've been messing around with Android-based code for a few months now while hacking on Native Firefox for Android and Pattrn. I'm assuming you're already familiar with ListViews and understand the framework around AdapterViews. I've added some Android source code pointers for the curious readers willing to understand things a bit deeper.

async and await -Simplied-Internals

When we use async and await keyword in our code, compile time a structure is generated which is said to be state machine. Why generated structure is termed as state machine, why not Strategy or Proxy? Answer to this question lies in definition of state machine. As per the definition of state machine available on internet "In general, a state machine is any device that stores the status of something at a given time and can operate on input to change the status and/or cause an action or output to take place for any given change." Does generated structure works like this? Answer is Yes. Async/Await keyword supports suspension and resumption model and this is all achieved with the help of state machine. In order to build state machine, compiler does a lot of thing in compiled code. We will explore these things in coming sections.

DependencyProperties, List, IList and WinRT

Recently, I was busy building a custom WinRT behavior, and I ran into what I thought was an unusual problem: I created a dependency property (IList), but somehow the PropertyChangedCallback would never fire. Sounds familiar?

Aspect Oriented Programming in .NET

I just completed my second book ".NET Interview questions" and now on my third book "SQL Server 2005 Interview questions". Had a decent time in between to update my skills and be in tune with new developments. Thanks to my publisher for giving me a free pass for the Aspect Oriented Programming seminar in Mumbai, that's what has inspired me to write this article. A lot has been written about AOP (Aspect Oriented Programming) on the Web, but none of the articles cover how to implement it practically in C#. Let's start with a small definition on AOP first: "Aspect Oriented Programming is a methodology to separate cross cut code across different modules in a software system." In short all the cross cut code is moved to a separate module, thus increasing more modularity and bringing in ease of maintenance. Okay, that was a theoretical definition, let's try to understand why we really need AOP when we have decent methodologies like "Object Oriented Programming" and "Procedural Oriented Programming". "Aspect oriented programming is not introduced in order to replace OOP, but assists it to remove its short comings. I see AOP as a brother of OOP".

Managing the JavaScript UI thread with the WinJS Scheduler

Apart from web workers and background tasks that run as web workers, all JavaScript code in a Windows Store app runs on what we call the UI thread. That code can invoke asynchronous WinRT APIs that perform their operations on separate threads, but there's one very important characteristic to remember: the results from all those non-UI threads eventually come back to the UI thread for processing. This means that making a bunch of async WinRT calls (like HTTP requests) all at once can potentially overload the UI thread if their results all come back at around the same time. Furthermore, if you (or WinJS) add elements to the DOM or change styles that trigger a layout pass on the UI thread, there's even more work that's competing for CPU resources . As a result, your app can become sluggish and unresponsive.

Building an ASP.NET Web API RESTful Service – Part 9

Once you publish your successful API, consumers will start depending on it and your exposed data will be used and integrated with other data in different ways, but it is known that change is inevitable and new requirements and changes will evolve, if you are lucky you will be able to adopt those changes without introducing any breaking changes for existing clients, but this is not the case always. So our API needs to change and we have to start building different versions from our API to handle those changes without affecting existing consumers. We need to run the new version concurrently with older version of the API to give consumers enough time to migrate to the latest version, in some cases multiple versions of the API can live forever side by side. There are multiple ways to version your API, each way has it is own pros and cons, in this post and the coming one we'll cover versioning by URI, query string, custom header, and by accept header.
