NSURLProtocol Tutorial

NSURLProtocol is like a magic key to the URL. It lets you redefine how Apple's URL Loading System operates, by defining custom URL schemes and redefining the behavior of existing URL schemes. Does that sound magical? It should. Because, if you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeliing you'll find URLs — much like love — are all around us. What does UIWebView use? URLs. What's used for video streaming with MPMoviePlayer? URLs. How do you send someone to your app on iTunes, initiate FaceTime or Skype, launch another app on the system, or even embed an image in an HTML file? With a URL. Have a peek at NSFileManager and notice what many of its file-manipulation methods require and return — URLs.

Floaty Balloon: How to Build a Flappy Bird Clone in 2 Hour

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll have probably heard of a little iOS game called Flappy Bird. Whilst users went nuts over it, the iOS developer community's response to Flappy Bird was a bit less enthusiastic; many criticised it for its poor implementation and relative crudeness. But though several developers declared that they could have built Flappy Bird in an hour, others quietly confessed that, although they could see it was simplistic, they actually wouldn't have the first clue where to begin with writing a game for iOS – even one as simple as Flappy Bird. Games are a hugely popular genre of app, but making games is a somewhat different process to traditional application development. There are dozens of ways to build games on iOS, from cross-platform tools such as Unity, to 3rd party frameworks such Cocos2D, to built-in APIs such as SpriteKit and GLKit. Most app developers have heard of these, but many have never have tried using them. In this tutorial, we'll demystify gaming on iOS by building Flappy Bird Floaty Balloon in a couple of hours, using ordinary UIKit classes that any app developer should already be familiar with. UIKit is not designed for gaming, but as we will demonstrate, it's perfectly suitable for building a simple game such as this.

Building a To-Do List with jQuery and Local Storage

We all have those days when we have a lot of things to accomplish, but no way to know if we will complete all of them. In these situations, a to-do list is extremely helpful. There are great mobile apps, online tools, and even WordPress plugins which perform this task, but have you ever wondered how long it would take to create one by yourself? In this tutorial, we will create a basic to-do list. Tasks will fall into one of three categories – pending, in progress, and completed. Our application will allow new tasks to be created, which go into the pending category by default. Tasks can easily be moved between categories using drag and drop technology. Of course, tasks can also be deleted.

Scott Hanselman's 2014 Ultimate Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows

Everyone collects utilities, and most folks have a list of a few that they feel are indispensable. Here's mine. Each has a distinct purpose, and I probably touch each at least a few times a week. For me, "util" means utilitarian and it means don't clutter my tray. If it saves me time, and seamlessly integrates with my life, it's the bomb. Many/most are free some aren't. Those that aren't free are very likely worth your 30-day trial, and very likely worth your money.

Checklist: What NOT to do in ASP.NET

About a year ago we thought it would be a good idea to do a talk on "What not to do in ASP.NET?" - basically an anti-patterns talks. We kept seeing folks falling into the same traps and wanted to be prescriptive as there's aspects to ASP.NET that are 10 years old and don't apply to today's internet, but there are also new aspects to ASP.NET that are only a year old, and perhaps haven't soaked into the zeitgeist quite yet.

A Guide to Core Data Concurrency

The iOS ethos of instant responsive UI elements means putting as much work as possible in background threads and as little work in the main thread. For most cases we are fine with using an NSOperationQueue or GCD, but getting concurrency to work in core data sometimes feels more like black magic than science. This post intends to demystify concurrency and offer two ways to go about it.

Introducing the Web Speech API

After receiving my bachelor's degree, I began working in a group called NLP. As the name implies, we focused on Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies. At the time, two of the most popular technologies to work with were the VoiceXML standard and Java applets. Both of them had issues. The first was only supported by Opera. The second, used to send the data to the server and execute an action based on the command pronounced by the user, required a lot of code and time. Today things are different. Thanks to the introduction of a dedicated JavaScript API, working with speech recognition has never been easier. This article will introduce you to this API, known as the Web Speech API. Speech recognition has several real-world applications. Many more people have become familiar with this concept thanks to softwares like Siri and S-Voice. These applications can drastically improve the way users, especially those with disabilities, perform tasks. In a website, users could navigate pages or populate form fields using their voice. Users could also interact with a page while driving, without taking their eyes off of the road. These are not trivial use cases.

Preventing Code Injection

Often, websites seem to exist primarily to put something into a database in order to pull it out later. While other database methods, such as NoSQL, have gained popularity in recent years, data for many websites still resides in the traditional SQL database. This data often consists of valuable personal information such as credit card numbers and other personal information of interest to identity thieves and criminals. Hackers therefore always look to get this data. One of the most common targets of these attacks is the SQL databases that lie behind many web applications through a process of SQL Injection. An injection attack works by getting the application to pass untrusted input on to the interpreter. Recently, 40,000 customer records being taken from Bell Canada are a result of an SQL Injection attack. In late 2013, hackers stole over $100,000 from a California based ISP using SQL injection.

Debugging With the Firefox DevTools

Over the past year I have given a presentation about using the browser for debugging client-side bugs. Throughout the presentation I would focus on using Chrome, as it's my primary browser and I just don't have the time to use multiple browsers while presenting. Now, I do suggest to others that they try out other browsers, as it can be very helpful. So here's a screencast where I'll show you a few sample applications, with some bugs, and how you can use the Firefox DevTools to debug them and compare and contrast the different tools.

Blocks and Table View Cells on iOS

A table view cell doesn't know about the table view it belongs to and that's fine. In fact, that's how it should be. However, people who are new to this concept are often confused by it. For example, if the user taps a button in a table view cell, how do you obtain the index path of the cell so you can fetch the corresponding model? In this tutorial, I'll show you how not to do this, how it's usually done, and how to do this with style and elegance.

Who said building Visual Studio Extensions was hard?

In years past building Visual Studio Extensions have often been considered the realm of the big boys. Staff working at Jetbrains or the Microsoft employees of the world. Last year I saw a talk given by Mads Kristensen aimed at taking away some of this stigma and showing how easy the guys at Microsoft have tried to make it for developers like you and me to just up and write extensions. I've been wanting to build one ever since, but haven't had a good enough excuse to jump right in – until now. Here follows the creation of "OnCheckin Web.config Transformer".

Today, we'd most likely load up a web browser, visit our favorite search engine, and start crafting a well-designed set of keywords that helps the search engine understand the problem we're trying to solve. In the ideal case, we'd find high quality official documentation with examples, or a highly voted-on topic from one of the major forums or crowd sourced Q&A web sites. We would then scan through the options, try to figure out what's relevant to us and do some copy/paste magic. We wanted this to be become more accessible and make finding relevant code samples for the given tasks you're trying to complete far easier.

Microsoft Launches Smart Visual Studio Add-On For Code Snippet Search

Whether you are a seasoned programmer or a beginner, chances are you spend a lot of your time looking for code snippets on Stack Overflow and similar sites. There's no need to reinvent the wheel, after all. Now, a team from Microsoft Research in Cambridge wants to streamline this process and bring it into the IDE. The team today launched the Bing Code Search add-on, which directly integrates code snippet search for C# (with other languages coming later) into Visual Studio.

Using Entity Framework 4.1 Code First with an existing database

This post focuses on using the Entity Framework 4.1 RC Fluent API with an existing database. When I say an existing database, what I really mean is that you're not letting EF Code First auto generate the database for you. So it could be that you like to create your entities and then manually craft the database. Or you may have a separate team of developers who like to control and manage the database. This article refers to the fluent API which is part of the Code First approach to the using the Entity Framework. Code First can create the database for you based on your entities and entity relationships, but as I mention above you may not want Code First to do this. Using EF Code First in this way is seen a core aspect of Code First by the EF team at Microsoft. So far I have to say I really like this approach, no large xml files to worry about, instead it's all controlled through code. Additionally the entities are plain old CLR objects (POCO). This means that your entities (and thus the assembly they are contained in) don't need to reference the Entity Framework. The following example shows how to create an entity model, then manually create your database and then map those entities to your database. Finally it shows using the DatabaseContext to save and retrieve entities.

How to build a VoIP application for Windows Phone 7 that will not be blocked by the service providers

VoIP technology is one of the fastest growing technologies today. It is used for voice communication over the Internet with high quality sound and due to its wide penetration it is supported by many devices. However many mobile service providers block the usage of the port 5060, which is used for SIP protocol. (SIP protocol is used in VoIP communications). This means that many mobile service providers block the usage of VoIP on your mobile phones. I have come up with a solution for this problem. It is a WP7 client application that communicates with a server through TCP/UDP protocol and the server communicates with a PBX through SIP protocol. This way the mobile service providers will not block the VoIP communication because they will only see the TCP/UDP communication between the client and the server.

SOLID: Part 4 - The Dependency Inversion Principle

It would be unjust to tell you that any one of the SOLID principles is more important than another. However, probably none of the others have such an immediate and profound effect on your code than the Dependency Inversion Principle, or DIP in short. If you find the other principles hard to grasp or apply, start with this one and apply the rest on code that already respects DIP.

Inheritance in XAML Styles

Style inheritance in XAML? Sounds funny? No. If we have inheritance in classes, CSS styles; then why not in XAML styles? There are many such occasions when we need to copy the same style in multiple templates/styles of a control. In this post, we will learn how to use a single piece of style and use it in other place to inherit the common styling. If you are using XAMLs excessively, this might be a very good topic for you. If you are a XAML designer and/or building a lot of...

Understanding Multipeer Connectivity Framework in iOS 7 – Part 1

The Multipeer Connectivity Framework is one of the many new frameworks iOS 7 introduces, and it broadens the range of the applications that can be built for the new operating system. Its aim is to enable developers to create applications that will allow devices being in close distance to get connected, simply using Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth. Great tools are offered for establishing communication between nearby devices, and for exchanging data and other resources without much effort to be required.

Site Policy in SharePoint

If you're using a SharePoint product then you've probably got some sites to manage — sites you've created, sites your users have created, and sites other administrators have created. Maybe some of these sites are tracking small projects that will outlive their usefulness in a short amount of time. There might even be more than a few sites that no one uses anymore, and those sites may have content or even site mailboxes that are just taking up space.
