Can we implement Inheritance in WCF ServiceContract

Can we implement Inheritance in WCF ServiceContract? YES we can have Contract Inheritance in WCF. In other words in WCF one ServiceContract can inherit other ServiceContract. Let us take an example that you have a ServiceContract named IParentService as given below.

Method Overloading in WCF: WCF Interview Series #1

Method or Operation overloading is one of the most important feature of OOPS. In programming languages like C, C++ and C#, this feature is heavily used by developers. While writing Service definition you may come across when you need to overload operations.

WCF 4.5 Services Development with Entity Framework and MVC 4

In this article, I'll be covering the implementation of Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) with Entity Framework (EF) and MVC 4. As far as prerequisites are concerned, I assume you have some familiarity with basic Web service and Web application concepts. However, I don't expect you to have any concrete experience using WCF or .NET 4.5. This will cover some of the basics around what it takes to build a simple application using WCF 4.5, with Entity Framework and present the data in the front-end using MVC 4. This application will be using a sample database (Northwind database), which is widely available on the Internet. The development environment used is Visual Studio 2012. The end result of this application will be displaying the data on an ASP.NET MVC. The service will be exposed and returns a list of ten most expensive products.

Tutorial on Message Exchange Patterns and Asynchronous Operations in WCF

In this article we will discuss the various message exchange patterns that the WCF service supports. We will also discuss how we can invoke the WCF service functions asynchronously. We will try to see each one of these message exchange techniques in details and try to see a sample application for each one of them.

Create a WCF service using the Entity Framework and consume after hosting it in IIS

This article will guide you through, to create a WCF service, host it in your local IIS and consume the service using a client console application. The data are going to be retrieved from an SQL Server 2012 using the Entity Framework. The database used in this tutorial is the AdventureWorks, a sample database which Microsoft provides for free. You can download it but have in mind that you need to convert it to a database compatible to the SQL Server 2012. If you have earlier versions like SQL Server 2008 R2 I am pretty sure you won't have any problem. Before starting, I assume you have already installed the above database in your SQL Server. So let's start:

Performing Select, Insert, Update and Delete with ease in Silverlight 4 using WCF RIA Services

The main idea behind this article is to learn performing the basic database operations in Silverlight 4 using the WCF RIA services. I have been searching the internet for any article which performs these CRUD operations but every article I get was only using the Datagrid control to execute this. So I decided to write an article which helps understanding it in more easy way by writing the code from scratch. By the end of this article you will find yourself very comfortable in interacting with database in Silverlight 4.

How To: GroupBy with WCF Data Services and Telerik virtual collection for WPF

In WCF Data Services there is a set of not supported LINQ queries and you will get NotSupportedException if you try to group RadGridView for WPF bound directly to such IQueryable or through QueryableCollectionView/VirtualQueryableCollectionView. There is an easy way to enable this and to achieve your goal you will need to inherit from VirtualQueryableCollectionView, override CreateView() method, download all the data from the service if the collection is grouped and group the data on the client.

Implementing a WCF Service with Entity Framework (v4.5)

In a previous article (Implementing a Basic Hello World WCF Service (v4.5)), we have learned how to create a basic WCF Service manually from scratch. In that article, we also manually created a host application, generated the proxy and configuration files, and created a test client to test the WCF Service. You can review that article to learn what a WCF Service is really like under the hood.

Now in this article, we will implement a simple WCF Service using a built-in Visual Studio WCF template. This simple WCF Service will have only one operation, GetProduct. This operation will accept an integer input as the product ID, and connect to a backend database to retrieve the product details for the specified product ID using LINQ to Entities. The Microsoft sample database Northwind will be used for the backend database, and Visual Studio 2012 will be used as the IDE.

In a future article (Concurrency Control of a WCF Service with Entity Framework (v4.5)), we will implement another operation, UpdateProduct, to update a product in the database through the Entity Framework. We will cover concurrency control in that article, and we will create a WPF test client in that article to test the UpdateProduct operation with concurrency support.

WCF and dependency inversion using Castle Windsor

When you start to work with TDD and other Agile practices the first thing you try to apply almost everywhere in your code is the Dependency Inversion pattern because you want to invert the logic of your dependencies to make your code more testable and maintainable.

In order to accomplish this result I am using Castle Windsor, while before 2013 I was working withMicrosoft Unity. I am not going to jump into the conversation "Which Inversion of Control container is better?" because it really depends on what you need to do. For years I was more than satisfied with Unity but recently I started to create complex bootstrappers for my applications and I found Windsor more flexible, that's it!
