Protocols in Objective-C help to define and standarize ways of communication between loosely coupled objects. A protocol is like an interface in other languages like Java. A class implementing a protocol promises to deal successfuly with the protocol methods. This allows smooth communication between objects. The object implementing a protocol (let's name it 'object A') has to deal with the protocol methods on its own. On the other hand, an object requiring the protocol implementation (object B) does not care how the protocol methods are impelemented by object A. What matters is that object A agrees to implement protocol methods, so object B can send messages to object A assuming that everything will work fine. There is no formal relationship between objects A and B required.
