Using Buddy with Windows Phone 8

Buddy is a Backend as a Service (BaaS) platform designed to do two things. First, it's designed to free mobile app developers from needing to build a backend service for their mobile app. Most mobile apps do a set of standard things: they create and manage users, save photos, create contact connections between users, and send push notifications, for example. We designed the Buddy platform to replace the work of building those back-end tasks, with just a few easy API calls. Using Buddy, you can focus on writing great mobile apps and not on managing servers.

40+ Beautiful Flat Web Designs for Your Inspiration

For the last couple of months, flat web design has been really a huge topic on the web. Up to now, it is steadily dominating the web. From UI, to the latest portfolio update, icons and even the top web design blogs are now using flat web design, not to mention Microsoft, Android and just recently Apple is going flat too! So why are so many designers using this style? Flat design makes things free from distractions, eliminating heavy background images, swirls, grunge that makes everything cluttered. It's very easy to navigate, since there are no more gradients, drop shadows, glows and bevels. It puts more focus on the text, making everything readable from big screens down to mobile.

Proximity in Windows Phone 8

At the recent Build developer conference in San Francisco I presented a session on networking in Windows Phone 8. Part of the session was about HTTP networking using the new HttpClient portable library, but one of the more interesting parts of the session was about Proximity and how you can use it in your app to enable cool scenarios such as multiplayer gaming or seamless content transfer. In this blog post I cover much of the same ground as in the talk, which you also can watch online. You can download the accompanying source code from MSDN: Proximity APIs Sample for Windows Phone 8.

Entity Framework in WinForms

The ADO.NET Entity Framework is Microsoft's latest data technology. It allows you to create conceptual data models that are easy to program against. It also includes a layer that bridges the conceptual models to the actual data store, so you can easily transfer data between the conceptual model and a backing database. If you are used to the traditional ADO.NET data classes (DataSet, DataAdapter, etc.), then you will probably find that working with the ADO.NET Entity Framework makes many things much simpler:

How to Consume WCF Service using JavaScript Proxy

Today I am going to discuss another great feature of WCF. Do you know that a WCF service allows us to create a JavaScript Proxy? Yes it does!! But let's first understand what is a proxy? As we already know, whenever we have to use any web service or WCF service, we need to create proxy of that service and with the help of proxy, we use the functionalists provided by the web/WCF service. Proxy acts an intermediary between the client of the service and the actual service. Proxy provides a simple interface to the consumer of service and all the intricacies like creating a connection, creating and sending the request, getting the response, etc. is handled by the proxy itself. So in our applications, we add service reference using the wizard to add the proxy of the service. We sometimes also use command line tool to create the proxy of the service. And then, use that proxy to create the instance of the service client and use the methods of the web service. Similarly JavaScript proxy enables the Client to connect the WCF service from the JavaScript or other client side libraries without writing any server side code. So in this post, we'll create a WCF Service, will update the required configuration and then, we'll use that web service with the help JavaScript proxy from application. We can use the JavaScript proxy to connect from the ASP.NET web forms and ASP.NET MVC applications both.

BDD FRAMEWORKS FOR NET

When I work in a project that implies Business Logic and Behaviors I usually prefer to write my unit tests using a Behavioral approach, because in this way I can easily projects my acceptance criteria into readable piece of code. Right now I am already on Visual Studio 2013 and I am struggling a bit with the internal test runner UX, because it doesn't really fit the behavioral frameworks I am used to work with. So I decided to try out some behavioral frameworks with Visual Studio 2013. I have a simple piece of functionality that I want to test. When you create a new Order object, if the Order Id is not provided with the right format, the class Order will throw an ArgumentException.

How to Easily Create an ASP.NET Excel-like Grid by Extending Telerik’s RadGrid

It is not uncommon to decide that you want to have Excel functionality inside a web page, if you have a requirement where you need to enter information in batches or modify a lot of data at once. An easy way to achieve Excel-like look and feel is to take the third-party Grid control you are using in your application, in my case Telerik's ASP.NET Data Grid, and adjust its behavior. In this blog post I am going to show you how to implement exactly this scenario.

Everything you wanted to know about SQL injection (but were afraid to ask)

Put on your black hats folks, it's time to learn some genuinely interesting things about SQL injection. Now remember – y'all play nice with the bits and pieces you're about to read, ok? SQL injection is a particularly interesting risk for a few different reasons: It's getting increasingly harder to write vulnerable code due to frameworks that automatically parameterise inputs – yet we still write bad code. You're not necessarily in the clear just because you use stored procedures or a shiny ORM (you're aware that SQLi can still get through these, right?) – we still build vulnerable apps around these mitigations. It's easily detected remotely by automated tools which can be orchestrated to crawl the web searching for vulnerable sites – yet we're still putting them out there.

Add Windows 8 Aero Theme Support to your WPF Custom Control

If you write your own WPF custom controls, you are probably aware of how to go about adding theming support for the various Windows themes. One of the more popular themes introduced in Windows Vista, and continued over to Windows 7, was the Aero theme. This is all fine and dandy if your WPF custom controls are used in applications that only run on Vista and Windows 7, but what happens when you try to use them on Windows 8? Well, I'll tell you… no Aero theme will be applied. Why? The Aero theme was removed from Windows 8. That's right, no more drop shadows, and no more glass window chrome effects.

A Calculation Engine for .NET

I recently had to build a Silverlight application showing a grid that looked and behaved like Excel as much as possible. One of the things I needed was a small, fast, flexible calculation engine that would allow users to type formulas into grid cells and see the results. I did a quick search and found a couple of nice calculation engines, but unfortunately none fit my needs. Some were a too large, some would not build under Silverlight, some were in C++, some required third party parser DLLs, etc. So I decided to adapt the parser and logic from a script engine I wrote a while ago for a reporting library. This code was stable and solid. All I had to do was extract the pieces I needed, clean them up, and optimize them as much as possible for size and speed.

A Modern Photobooth Web Application Built With ASP.Net AJAX

As a Developer Evangelist for Telerik's ASP.Net controls, I get to see the really neat controls we're building before they are delivered to you our customers. In January, I saw the upcoming release of the Image Editor control and got very excited about the possibilities of having a full image editor in the browser. You see, I have been working with HTML5 over the past year, and I knew there were capabilities to access a web cam from the browser. My mind put two and two together and thought it would be REALLY neat to build a photobooth application. In preparation for Telerik's entry in the Best of Tech Ed competition, we decided to complete that demonstration website. This is the story of how we delivered a Photobooth web application to Telerik's award winning Best of TechEd entry.
