Core Bluetooth in iOS 5 enabled you to communicate easily with Bluetooth devices using the Bluetooth Low Energy (sometimes Bluetooth Smart) protocol. The advantage is that any app can communicate with any hardware device without resorting to proprietary APIs. Ole Begemann shows you some examples using off-the-shelf Bluetooth devices.
