Device tracking has its good and evil uses. On the good side, developers can track device and OS version adoption for future development planning, or subscriptions, game progress and similar user status. In the past, iOS developers had to roll their own tracking code, often relying on device UDIDs (GUIDs). iOS introduced official new APIs for tracking in iOS 6, and now Apple is cracking down on the old methods.
