ASP.NET MVC 3 plug-in architecture using Griffin.MvcContrib

Introduction

Griffin.MvcContrib is a contribution project for ASP.NET MVC3 which contains different features like extendable HTML Helpers (you can modify the HTML that the existing helpers generate), easy localization support and a quite fresh support for plugin development. The purpose of this article is to provide a step-by-step instruction on how you can develop plugins using Griffin.MvcContrib.

Using the code

The plugin support are based on the Area support which MVC3 got. If you haven't used areas before, I suggest that you start by reading the following article.

Most basic approach.

This first sample is not really a plugin system but only showing how you can move your code to class libraries. The example will only contain one class library to avoid confusion. Start by creating a new ASP.NET MVC3 project (of any kind) and a class library project. For convenience we would like to have support for Razor and all MVC3 wizards in our class library. It helps us add some basic files whic…

Implementing ASP.NET MVC Views in three different ways

The ASP.NET MVC Framework allows building a Web application as a composition of three roles: Model, View, and Controller. The View role can be implemented in several ways. The popular view engines used in the ASP.NET MVC 3 Framework are the Razor View Engine and the Web Forms (ASPX) view engine. Other than that a View can be implemented by accessing Controller methods using jQuery. This article illustrates all these ways of implementation of Views in an MVC application.

Client-Side Logging in Silverlight

Many of us have implemented logging in our ASP.NET, Windows Forms and WPF applications, so why shouldn't you do the same in your Silverlight applications? Well, you should. In this blog post I will show you one approach on how you might perform this logging. The class I will use is called PDSALoggingManager. This class has a method named Log() you use to publish data into a log file in your Silverlight application. A method named LogException() is also available for logging information about any exceptions that happen on the client-side of your Silverlight application. Let's take a look at the usage of the PDSALoggingManager class.

Need to unbind local folder from SVN

If you want to unbind or remove mapping of your local folder from SVN, then you can right click the folder -> choose TortoiseSVN -> Export and choose the same location as the folder currently is in (i.e. export the folder to itself)
This will 'un-version' the whole folder.
Or you can also remove all .svn file from that project.

Understanding ASP.NET MVC (Model View Controller) Architecture for Beginners

This article is intended to provide basic concepts and fundamentals of ASP.NET MVC (Model View Controller) architecture workflow for beginners.

"M" "V" "C" stands for "MODEL" "VIEW" "CONTROLLER". ASP.NET MVC is an architecture to develop ASP.NET web applications in a different manner than the traditional ASP.NET web development. Web applications developed with ASP.NET MVC are even more SEO (Search Engine) friendly.

Developing ASP.NET MVC application requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 or higher.

An introduction to cross-platform mobile development technologies

Introduction

Smartphones and tablets are becoming ubiquitous, and, with them, mobile apps. But what does the proliferation of different devices mean for developers entering the market? Do you target a single platform, build your app twice for iOS and Android, or use a cross-platform framework?

Here's a bit of history, and an overview of the different technologies on the market now:

First, there was the iPhone

There were smartphones before the iPhone and there were mobile apps as well. Windows CE was first released in 1996, but it was Apple's iPhone (launched in 2007) that really signaled the start of the smartphone era.

Originally, the iPhone didn't allow third-party native-code apps to be installed; developers wanting to add their own content had to do so using HTML web apps running in the phone's browser. There were some extensions to make such apps look like Apple's apps rather than web pages, but access to the hardware was limited.

With 2008 came the App Store, and w…

Streaming MP3 player in WP7

This article show how to create a streaming MP3 music player in Windows Phone 7. All the music files are stored in the server and are streamed to Windows Phone. Application first loads all the albums data from server with JSON data. In server side there are PHP script which loads ID3 tags from all the MP3 files and generates JSON string, which is returned to Windows Phone. After that application deserializes JSON string to dynamic objects and the albums data is displayed in the Panorama page (image 3). Selected album songs will be displayed in the new Songs Page (image 5).

Finding the Id (Guid) for a SharePoint List

There are times when you need to find the Id (a Guid) of a list – for example, when setting the Task list to be used with SharePoint Designer Workflows. Here's a simple way of doing this:
Navigate to the SharePoint list using the browser.Select the Settings + List Settings menu command.Copy the Url from the browser address bar into Notepad. It will look something like:http://moss2007/ProjectX/_layouts/listedit.aspx?List=%7B26534EF9%2DAB3A%2D46E0%2DAE56%2DEFF168BE562F%7D
Delete everying before and including "List=".Change "%7B" to "{" Change all "%2D" to "-"Chnage "%7D" to "}"You are now left with the Id:

Retrieve System Information in Silverlight

In a Silverlight application we are building for a client, they wanted an About screen that would display system information such as the current URL, the operating system name and version, the product name and various other information. In the same application, we built a logging system to gather this same information and write that information to a file to help developers troubleshoot issues. We decided to create a Silverlight class that would gather the information shown in Figure 1.

Metro: Implement a parallactic scrolling for your GridView

A customer of mine asked me about how to create a "parallactic scrolling" for the background of a GridView. For people that do not know what it is, parallactic scrolling is when you have a background image scrolling slower than the foreground content. This tecnique is mostly used in games to give the impression of depth of field with the overlapping of a number of elements that moves slower when they apper to be far from the observer.

Porting a simple Silverlight game loop to Windows8 Metro style

Yesterday evening I went on the hunt for a XAML/C#-based example of a game loop. I ran into a couple of OLD blog posts by Mike Snow. Naturally it caught my eye, simply because of his last name.

In his posts he described game loop based on Silverlight 2. OK. Silverlight uses XAML, and the code was C#. XAML/C# are first-class citizens in the Windows 8 Metro style app world, so I figured, why not see what it takes to make this work on Windows 8?

Telerik WP Controls Roadmap - what is coming in our next release

The next release of RadControls for WindowsPhone is near and I would like to shed some light on what we have been working on in the last three months. In this blog post I'll just highlight the new goodies, more details will be available later as we approach to release.

The first thing that I want to share is the work that we did to improve the total experience in creating applications with our tools. Matching the Metro design guidelines and designing your application to the highest Metro standards sometimes is hard and we decided to give you a major help in this direction.

Common SharePoint Foundation Terms Every SharePoint Developer Must Know

Here is the brief definition of commonly used SharePoint terms which every one should know as a SharePoint developer.

Alerts:

Alerts provide a framework for automating event-driven e-mail or Short Message Service (SMS) notifications that are raised in response to specific events or that run on a schedule. Alerts can be attached to items as granular as list or list item.

Content Types:

Content types are designed to help users organize their SharePoint content in a more meaningful way. A content type is a reusable collection of settings, features and metadata that you want to apply to a certain category of content. Content types enable you to manage the metadata and behaviors of a document or item type in a centralized, reusable way.

Content Pages:

Content pages are pages used to display information. Content pages are customized by using Web Parts, in-browser editing, Microsoft SharePoint Designer and themes. Custom master pages, ECMAScript (JavaScript, JScript), and CSS can be applied to con…

SharePoint 2010 - Sharing data between Visual Web Parts

Sometimes developers might need to shared data between web parts. In this article I am going to demonstrate how you can share data between two Visual web parts.

For the purpose of article, I am going to create two web parts one will ask user to select the gender and the other web part will display the selected gender. This scenario looks so simple, but for the purpose of demonstrating how to share data between Visual web parts, I believe the scenario is ok.

For the purpose of this Article, I am going to create two Visual web parts as follows.

GenderProvider web part – This web part will allow users to select the gender using a radiobuttonlist. This web part will provide gender data to other web parts.
GenderConsumerWebpart – This web part will display what the user has selected in the first web part.

The following are the steps for building such an application.
Create an Empty SharePoint 2010 projectCreate an Interface that represents the data to be sharedCreate a provider web part that…

3D Space Flight Demo for Android OS, with Accelerometer-Based Controls

This article describes a modest 3D game ("Demofox") written for devices running the Android OS. While the scope of this game is limited (it has two levels and no enemies to fight), the code provided does address some difficult issues effectively, particularly in the area of user input.

The objective of game play is to direct a spaceship forward through a continuous series of obstacles (rectangular prisms) without contacting them. Forward flight (positive motion in the "Z" dimension) takes place at all times. The user is able to effect position changes in the X and Y dimensions, within limits. The perspective shown to the user is first person, with the spaceship itself not visible.

Figure 2 below shows a model of the game world. For clarity, this figure is rendered using parallel projection, whereas the game itself uses perspective projection with a vanishing point. As shown, movement is constrained to the interior of a long, tunnel-like rectangular solid of indefini…

WPF: Belt Clock

Simple Metro Style Panorama Control for WPF

The attached code doesn't really do much so it doesn't need much jibber jabber describing what it does. What it does is pretty simple and can quite easily be summarized by the following few points:

Create a Metro style control. I say Style, as it may not be 100% in line with what the Win8 Metro tile interface does, or how it functions, but to be honest, it fitted my needs well enough and I figured it may be OK for others. So be warned, it is not like the best control ever, it is in fact pretty simple.
Allow it to be used in direct content mode/or use MVVM to drive the creation of UI elements, via DataBinding.
Allow users to customise the primary/complementary colors that should be used when generating tiles.
Allow single tile group snap back animations (you know when you have not dragged past 1/2 way ala iPhone UI experience, it snaps back to the previous tile group).
Works with WPF.

I wrote this control because I could not find one that seemed to work, I am aware of one in …

Important Useful Objective-C Snippets for Your iOS Applications

Being an iOS developer, you should keep a shed-load of Objective-C snippets nearby so whenever you are coding that you can refer to and copy into your application. There are so many commonly employed elements in an iOS app that it is just about impossible to remember them all. In this article, we will share most important of them. Some are longer than others, but they are all invaluable to any iPhone or iPad developer.

One great way to make use of these snippets is to assign them to short keywords in an app like TextExpander, speeding up your app development significantly.

Lets check them individually,

Modify Web.config File Dynamically in SharePoint 2010

Recently I was asked to modify a custom solution downloaded from CodePlex to allow it to updated web.config file programmatically. The deployment steps provided from CodePlex involve manual modification to web.config files on all WFE servers across the farm which is not a best practice approach for deploying custom solutions.

There are many other articles and posts discussing the same topic, however many people had the same issue that I was facing;
It adds multiple entries into web.config file where it should only add one single entry. It does not delete entries from web.config file.I'd just want to share my complete code for people who would like to get more idea on how this is done in SharePoint.

Adventures in Unhandled Exception Handling for XNA/Silverlight

One thing that can tick off your users / players is that inevitable time through a series of random events a crash occurs, it's unhandled and causes the app/game to just crash. Bang their goes all my progress and saves, very bad experience.

Even with the best of breed apps and games this can happen just because we are human and cannot account for every single possibility or potentially crafty thing that users / players can do, whether it's intentional, accidental or just plain dumb, or it could even be your fault who'd have thought that players / users would want to do something that way.

Getting an App in the Windows Store: What, Why and How

Most of my readers are probably aware that Windows 8 is on the horizon. If you're a software developer, whether an experienced Windows dev, or one who works on other platform, chances are good that you've at least heard of it. What I propose to do in this post is argue for a simple proposition...every developer who would like to put some additional money in their pocket owes it to themselves to learn the What, Why, and How of the Windows Store.

What
The "What" portion of this post is pretty straightforward, namely the Windows Store. New to Windows 8, the Windows Store is the single place for consumers to find and acquire Metro style apps in Windows 8.

Google Analytics on your WP App in 1 minute

I've been in contact with Michael Scherotter for some time about NuGet and MSAF, thanks for the support Michael. Basically the MSAF project is really powerful and can be applied to your Windows Phone project quite easily when you know how to do this. I've written about it a couple of times. However when we upgraded to Mango all dlls were upgraded except the Google.WebAnalytics dll. The mismatch in versions was causing a lot of problems because some libraries were asking for a 7.0 version of System.Windows.Interactivity and some were asking for the 7.1 version. I fixed that for the NuGet release, everything is 7.1 based.

Farseer tutorial for the absolute beginners

This post is inspired (and somewhat a direct copy) of a couple of posts Emanuele Feronato wrote back in 2009 about Box2D (his tutorial was ActionScript 3 based for Box2D, this is C# XNA for the Farseer Physics Engine).

What is Farseer
The Farseer Physics Engine is a collision detection system with realistic physics responses to help you easily create simple hobby games or complex simulation systems. Farseer was built as a .NET version of Box2D (based on the Box2D.XNA port of Box2D). While the constructs and syntax has changed over the years, the principles remain the same.

Being productive when your app is offscreen

In the Managing app lifecycle post, Adam Barrus described the new app lifecycle introduced in Windows 8. The most common question we hear is "what if my app has to do something important when it is not on screen, for example, download a file or email or play music"? In this two part series, I'll tell you about the different types of activities that an app can do when it's in the background and show some code examples to that support these scenarios.

Why Developers Should Care About Design, and How Metro Helps

I'm going to avoid casting aspersions on my fellow developers and instead simply own up to my own failings…I've been developing software since I was 10 years old (my first program was written in BASIC on a Commodore PET), and professionally for well over a decade, and for most of that time, I believed that design was someone else's job, and that it didn't matter whether I could design my way out of a paper bag.

WRONG!

Design is everyone's responsibility, at least to some degree. No, you don't have to start wearing black turtlenecks or engaging in other clichés, but what you should do is start cultivating a basic knowledge of design, and training your eye for what is and isn't good design, both in the world of pixels as well as in the real world. Have you ever found yourself marveling at how difficult it is to figure out how to use some basic device? Listen to that voice in your head...it's telling you that you're dealing with a bad design.

WP Tip: Get the Assembly Version Number

When creating a Windows Phone application that will be submitted and hopefully published in the Marketplace, is always a good idea to have an "About" page where users can find information about the application, the author and even support contact information. When doing this, you should always include the application version number, so you know which version of your application the user has. This will save you a lot of time when trying to solve issues or when trying to replicate certain behaviours.

Designing WP Applications With Photoshop

When it comes to being an indie-app-developer, you usually find yourself being the Jack of All Trades. You are the developer, designer, tester and marketer.
This really isn't easy, besides being good in each of these fields, and usually you are not, you need to familiarize yourself with various tools, each for it's own role in creating the application.

The most confusing of all to the common developer is usually designing the application UI.

WP Tip: URIs Rules

When developing frontend applications, especially on a platform like Silverlight and Windows Phone you will always need to load resources, whether from remote or local locations, you need to deal with URIs.

On Windows Phone there are a few rules regarding the usage of URIs to load resources, which might be difficult to remember. In particular, remembering when to use the leading forward slash.

WP A-Z Resources

In my endeavor to learn the best aspects of Windows Phone 7 development I have been looking out for resources ever since I started developing one. In this post I would like to point you all to an excellent post one of my favorite technical blogger Scot Hanselman. Scot is a principal program manager at Microsoft and works for the Web Department. He recently wrote a blog post titled – From Concept to Code in 6 hours: Shipping my first Windows Phone App. An excellent article in which he outlines his experience of developing an windows phone 7 mango app. This article has a load of goodies laid out all over the article. I will try to collate them as a bullet point and just keep it short. Head over to Scot's blog post to read it completely. So if you just needed a bullet list for all the resources read on. :)
