Build an AngularJS App Powered by Python EVE: Part 2

In the previous part of this series, we implemented the sign-in and sign-up process using the Eve API we created in the first part of the series. We used Node.js and AngularJS to create and get our app running. In this tutorial, we'll take our app development to the next level by using the Add, Edit and Delete APIs to create items in the user home page.

Input Accessory View (How to add extra controls above keyboard)

When building iPhone applications that support or provide text input, it's often necessary to create some extra buttons (or other controls) beyond the ones provided by the default keyboard interface. Those buttons should be created for specific operations needed by your application, such as moving to the next or previous text field, make the keyboard disappear e.t.c. To understand what exactly this is all about, just see what's happening when you are using the Safari browser and you type username/password values to login in your e-mail account. Just right above the keyboard, there are two buttons that allow you to move to the next or previous field and a third button that allows you to close the keyboard and see the whole browser again.

Importing & Exporting Documents in iOS

One of the common tasks that an iOS developer has to do is to import or export documents from his iOS application. For example, suppose you are developing a document reader and you want to allow the user to import documents into your application so that it can be read offline. Also, your reader might also support the exporting of documents so that other applications can make use of the document.

Using Node.js to build REST APIs

Node.js is a platform for building server applications using JavaScript. The platform provides a way to create web applications and services that have to serve a large number of clients. One can quickly setup a basic server using Node.js that serves pages and APIs. In the last two posts, we saw how to get started with Node.js and how to serve pages and static content. In this post, we will see how to build some basic REST APIs using Node.js.

How To Start Unit Testing in Swift

Last week I wrote about code quality and one area I covered was unit testing. Unit testing is the process of validating that pieces of your code operate as you expect. As you can imagine, this is a very useful aid in software development. If you're only using your eyes to determine if your app is functioning you're leaning on hope. The hope, being, that the house doesn't come crumbling down since you can't confidently say that everything works. The moment you ship the app to the store is one filled with anxiety. Undoubtably you discover a soul-crushing bug(s) that you scramble to push to the store, waiting on the Apple overlords.

How To Manage Dependencies with CocoaPods

There are great open source projects out there maintained by dedicated individuals and companies. One big problem you may face when bringing these projects into yours is managing them. When you bring in a 3rd party library you inherit a certain amount of risk. The biggest, of which, is that you can bring something in that could break your app. You download a new update, add files to your project, configure build settings, run your app, and then discover nothing works. You then panic, trace your steps backwards, and finally revert to the previous version… if you can remember which version you were using.

What You Need To Know To Start Learning How To Code

There is something very special about creating an experience that another human can be entertained by or that makes their life a little easier . The desire to learn how to code came from a deeper desire to be in full control. Instead of relying on others to make things happen I would have the ability to get the ball rolling. I knew from an early age that this would become a huge asset as I began creating a company.

Let’s Walk Through The Apple TestFlight Experience

While there are other great alternatives, like Hockey App, it isn't a perfect solution for those who can't add a recurring expense to their development cycle. That's just not an option for plenty of people out there. While there are a few other free alternatives, I've really enjoyed my time with Beta by Crashlytics. That said, Apple will shut down the old TestFlight and encourage everyone to move to the new experience under iTunes Connect on February 26th, 2015. To prepare you for that this post will dive into the TestFlight experience so you can determine if it is something you'd like to pursue, or if Crashlytics or Hockey App is where you should go. By the time you finish this article you'll have a pretty good idea which road to take.

UIScrollCeption: embedding multiple UIWebViews in a UITableView

You don't have that much choice to display HTML content with basic UIKit components. You're basically limited to UIWebView and… nothing else. It's a mini Safari, so it does the job very well. ASP.NET Patterns every developer should know

For the past year or so, I've been involved in documentation of frameworks that help developers to write better code, and to create applications that are more efficient and easier to test, debug, maintain, and extend. During that time, it has been interesting to see the continuing development of best practice techniques and tools at one of the leading software companies in our industry. Most of the work was outside my usual sphere of ASP.NET and Web development, concentrating mainly on Windows Forms applications built using .NET 2.0. This is an area where the standard design patterns that have evolved over many years are increasingly being refined and put into practice.

jQuery More/Less Text

It was recently asked by a client to add a functionality that only displays the first few lines of a block of content with a "More" link at the bottom which when clicked, would expand the content to show fully. This can easily be done with just a little bit of jQuery and CSS. If a user doesn't have JavaScript enabled, the page will just display the content expanded and hide the More/Less buttons.

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is taking place this week following the company's kickoff keynote presentation yesterday where it introduced the future of iOS, OS X, and its new Apple Music service, among other updates. As is tradition, one of the first presentations after the keynote was to announce this year's Apple Design Award winners, a small-scale award show of sorts where Apple honors select app developers by recognize their work and success over the last year.

Web Development - Building Responsive Web Sites with Bootstrap

In the past, a Web site that supported mobile and desktop required different code bases. Today, however, there are UI frameworks that allow a site's Web pages to support mobile, tablet, desktop and even large-screen desktops—all with a single code base. Though these tools aren't a panacea for mobile Web developers, they can significantly ease the development process. Still, thought must be given to determine if one is right for your site.

A N-Tier Architecture Sample with ASP.NET MVC3, WCF, and Entity Framework

N-Tier software architecture can solve the following client/server system issues: scalability, security, fault tolerance and etc. In our previous article "N-Tier Architecture and Tips" we introduce the basic N-Tier architecture concepts and some practical tips. In this article, we try to elaborate a N-Tier architecture sample with ASP.NET MVC3, WCF and Entity Framework. In Java, usually there is a pre-defined way to achieve the N-Tier architecture: J2EE architecture, which uses session bean over entity bean for business and persistence layer, Java bean, servlet or JSP for the client presenter layer, Java Swing, HTML or applet as the client side. Therefore, for J2EE, different application are very likely implemented in very similar ways. However, in .NET, even though there are many tools and features available, there isn't any pre-defined way as J2EE does to guard how to implement the N-Tier architecture. As a result, there are too many inconsistent and existing ways to do this. Some are good; some are bad. This article tries to introduce a decoupled, unit-testable, deployment-flexible, implementation-efficient and validation-flexible N-Tier architecture in .NET. What we achieved here is to put some well-known nice tools and features in .NET together and come up with a workable solution. Because there is too much to cover in one article, we will mainly concentrate on business and persistence layers of N-Tier architecture in our sample solution, but will still briefly touch other layers too. In order to understand better this article, we suggest you to read first our previous article on the basics of N-Tier architecture here. As our previous article, this article is also based on the assumption that a team has a full control over all layers of the N-Tier architecture.

Application Lifecycle Management

For years, Visual Studio has enabled software development organizations to break free of rigid, process-oriented application lifecycles that isolate development, testing, project management and operations teams. Microsoft's approach to Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) provides a flexible and agile environment that adapts to your team's needs, removes barriers between roles, and streamlines processes so you can focus on delivering high-quality software faster and more efficiently. In a world where software development is increasingly critical to business success, the ALM principles embodied by Visual Studio are more relevant than ever.
