To build successful products, you and your team have to become a lean, mean, measuring machine! Otherwise, you'll have little way of knowing which parts of your app are consistently used and in working order. There are many ways to measure usage and many off-the-shelf frameworks that can help. In this tutorial, you're going to look at using Google Analytics for iOS. This tutorial will take you through the major components of the Google Analytics SDK. Along the way, you will add Google Analytics to a timer app suitable for runners, and put the SDK to work tracking how frequently people use the various features and controls. SOLID are five basic principles which help to create good software architecture. SOLID is an acronym where:-
  1. S stands for SRP (Single responsibility principle):- A class should take care of only one responsibility.
  2. O stands for OCP (Open closed principle):- Extension should be preferred over modification.
  3. L stands for LSP (Liskov substitution principle):- A parent class object should be able to refer child objects seamlessly during runtime polymorphism.
  4. I stands for ISP (Interface segregation principle):- Client should not be forced to use an interface if it does not need it.
  5. D stands for DIP (Dependency inversion principle) :- High level modules should not depend on low level modules but should depend on abstraction.

Android SDK: Next Steps

In this series, we've begun learning how to develop Android applications from scratch. We started exploring the development tools, got acquainted with the basic elements in an application project, looked at user interface design, interactivity, resources, and data, and we've also took a closer look at what happens when your application is running. What we've covered so far should put you in a good position to get started creating functional Android applications, but Android has a lot more to offer so the range of possibilities is virtually endless. You may therefore struggle to choose what to learn next. In this part, we'll wrap up the series by pointing out some possible directions for future learning. After this, the final part will be a quiz on what we covered throughout the series.

Create and consume WCF Restful Service using an HttpClient

Restful Services are getting more and more popular in our days and .NET developers prefer to build them through the Web API Framework, which let's be honest it sounds right. You need to know though that WCF Framework also provides the support for building services that can be consumed over HTTP requests so you might wonder what are the differences between the two of them and which of these are the best to go with. Well, the answer is quite long and exceeds this post's scope but in my mind, Web API is used to serve data, that is you request an API controller's action to get back or post some data while WCF can be invoked in order to make different kind of operations such as heavy calculations, maybe a transaction. Anyway, this post will show you how easy is to create a WCF Restful service and consume it, either from a simple browser typing the right URL or from another application using an HttpClient.

Get Started With GitHub Pages (Plus Bonus Jekyll)

Normally when you host stuff on GitHub, you're just storing your files there. If you push site files, what you're storing is the code, and when you view a file, you're viewing the code rather than the output. What GitHub Pages lets you do is store those files, and if they're HTML files, you can view them like any other website, so there's no need to host them separately yourself. GitHub Pages accepts static HTML but can't execute languages like PHP, or use a database in the way you're probably used to, so you'll need to output static HTML files. This is where templating tools such as Jekyll come in, which I'll talk about later. The main benefit of GitHub Pages is ease of collaboration. Changes you make in the repository are automatically synced, so if your site's hosted on GitHub, it's as up-to-date as your GitHub repository. This really appeals to me because when I just want to quickly get something set up, I don't want to mess around with hosting; and when people submit a pull request, I want that change to be visible as soon as I merge it without having to set up web hooks.

Choosing a JavaScript MVC Framework

So you love the way single-page apps like Gmail and Trello feel, but aren't sure where to start. Maybe your JavaScript code has become disorganized enough that you are convinced to try one of the numerous JavaScript MVC libraries/frameworks on your next project but aren't sure which one to choose. I'm writing a book on single-page apps so I've pretty much "read the internet" on the topic. I'll attempt to provide some not so obvious insights to help you make your decision.

In this tutorial, we'll focus on releasing applications through Google Play, but you can release them through other channels if you prefer. To publish an application through the Google Play store, you have to pay attention to a number of requirements, which aren't necessarily applicable when you release your applications through another channel. However, these requirements are good practices for any publication process.

Implementing multiple file upload with progress bars within ASP.NET

In this article I will demonstrate how to implement multiple file uploads with real-time progress bars within an ASP.NET solution using the Uploadify libraries. The HttpHandler class developed herein should easily plug and play into any ASP.NET application, along with the provided ASP.NET control or class, making this useful as plug-in-play code as well as a demonstration of how to program the HttpHandler. In addition, I have added additional features in the ASP.NET layer, including file extension filtering, post-back upon completion, and session-based security.

AutoLayout and UILabel Don't Get Along

AutoLayout constraints are a huge improvement for page layout, but it doesn't always act the way it should. Take the UILabel for example. When constrained to another control, and the number of lines is set to 0, the text should be forced to wrap due to the UILabel's constraints. Unfortunately what you get looks like this. The constraint on the UILabel is ignored.

A Domain Specific Language for Android touch events: Part 1: Description and usage of the DSL

In writing a custom control (on which a later article will follow) I came to the conclusion that most of the time, when handling touch events you have a sequence of events and certain conditions on which you want to respond. If the sequence is not correct or a condition is not fulfilled, then you don't want anything to happen.

Android SDK: Running & Debugging

For those who have been following this series on Android app development, the app we created earlier doesn't do much at the moment, but we can use it to work through the process of running apps as you develop, as well as introducing some of the Eclipse ADT utilities you will use for debugging once your apps become more advanced. When you have completed this tutorial, you may wish to spend some time making adjustments to the code in the app we created, and then run it on a physical or virtual device. This tutorial will help you get into the routine of using devices during development and running your apps regularly, so that you catch errors as you code.
