Introduction To Data Binding for Windows and WP (part 1)

Given how long Microsoft has been using XAML in one shape or another across a range of technologies (WPF, Silverlight, Windows Phone, XBox, Windows 8) it still surprises me how often I get asked about data binding. In this series we're going to go back to basics and take a look at how to use data binding within you Window 8 and Windows Phone application. For the most part I'll focus on Windows Phone but data binding across these platforms is relatively similar, so a lot of the concepts will carry across without me having to give multiple examples. Additionally, most of these concepts will apply equally well to data binding in Silverlight or WPF.

Writing a Win8 App with VisualStudio and TFS

A lot of people ask me how they can write a Windows 8 App with Visual Studio and Team Foundation Service (our online, hosted version of Team Foundation Server). In fact, I was talking with a friend recently whom I used to code with about 10 years ago. It had been a long time since he programmed with C# (nearly 10 years?) as he now spends most of his time programming low level driver code. He challenged me with how fast a "new" developer could get started with writing a Windows 8 App. He set the challenge asking if a new developer could get started in under 1 day. Challenge accepted. Challenge accomplished. Here is my journey through documenting how a new developer can get started with Windows 8 application development using Visual Studio & Team Foundation Service.

Downloading file from WebClient

Every one, once in a life time, downloaded something. Imagine the case when you have a webpage containing a lot of songs, and you need to download every song. You can either use the layman's approach, that is right clicking on each and every link and saving file; or you can use the programmer's approach which is getting all HTML of the webpage, parsing it to get all the links and then downloading all the files simultaneously. In this post however, we will see how to download a file from a website. Here we will download one of my favorite song Dilli Wali Girlfriend. For that I have created a simple console application. And just a 5 line of code served the purpose.

Web API basic CRUD Operations following HTTP principles

Web API makes building HTTP Services quite easy and pleasant since most of the hard work is taking place under it's Framework's umbrella. For example, when a client application makes a call to a Web API client, Web API can figure out by itself, what type of data passed to it and what type of data is expected to be returned. This transparency though, doesn't mean that you don't need to be aware of the basic HTTP Restful principles. We have seen in previous post the basics for starting with Web API but we weren't so absolute as far as for the HTTP principles. This post will show you the right way to build HTTP Services with Web API. We will create a solution to support all CRUD operations Create - Read - Update - Delete on in-memory data. Let's begin.

To use NHibernate.Search one has to extract the instructions from a lot of different places, which sometimes have outdated information. This blog post is a summary of how I was able to successfully add an NHibernate.Search-powered search function to an existing NHibernate project.

iOS SDK: Creating a Custom Accordion Menu

The accordion menu's initial position will be at the center of the target view it appears on. When the menu appears, half of it will move towards the top of the target view, while the other half will move towards the bottom of the view, expanding to its full allowed height. During use, both the Y origin point and the height are going to be modified so that the desired effect can take place. The menu itself will consist of a tableview. It will provide us with great flexibility regarding the number of options added to the menu. The tableview is going to exist as a subview on a view and will appear on a target view. The main view of the accordion menu's view controller will work as a cover to the subviews existing at the back, so the user is unable to tap on anything else except for our menu options.

Nhibernate Caching With Redis

So I've recently been playing a bit with Redis, and also NHibernate so I thought, why not put them together. NHibernate supports a so-called 2nd level cache. For which you can use a number of different providers such as Memcached or Microsoft AppFabric / Velocity. But more recently thanks to some great people you can also use Redis as your 2nd level cache.

How to work with Telerik RadAutoCompleteBox (Silverlight & WP)

Developers always try to provide the user a easiest way to represent the data irrespective of the technology that has been used. Hence, for a huge collection of data, generally we provide "AutoComplete TextBox" to the user instead of ComboBox or ListBox. The reason behind this is to provide searchable and filterable UI to the user for easy access. Today in this post, we will learn how to use the Telerik's RadAutoCompleteBox in both Silverlight and Windows Phone. More or less we all know about AutoCompleteBox and how it works. But in this post, we will see the Telerik's RadControls library to use the AutoCompleteBox and the difference between Silverlight and Windows Phone APIs. Telerik's RadAutoCompleteBox is present in the "Telerik.Windows.Controls.Input.dll" under the "Telerik.Windows.Controls" namespace and provides the user easy way to access the data in a searchable and filterable mode. If you are willing to use the control, you must have the required...

Five Great .NET Framework 4.5 Features

t has been almost a year since .NET 4.5 got released. But the problems with most of the recent Microsoft releases have been communication with .NET developers. Only one or two features are known to developers and other features just stay on MSDN and end up becoming simple documents. For example, the time you ask a .NET developer what is new in the core framework .NET 4.5 most of them will just say async and awaitt (at least with people whom I have interacted have just talked about those features). Again it's very difficult to run through all the new features. Because the features may not sound interesting depending on what you are working currently on.. So in this article I have picked my five favorite features introduced in .NET 4.5 core. Again it's possible my favorites cannot be your favorites. But what I have done is while choosing these features I kept in mind the larger .NET community and I hope I have met that expectation.

Android SDK: Create a Barcode Reader

In this tutorial, we'll use the ZXing (Zebra Crossing) library to carry out barcode scanning within an Android app. We'll call on the resources in this open source library within our app, retrieving and processing the returned results. Since we're using the ZXing library, we don't need to worry about users without the barcode scanner installed, because the integration classes provided will take care of this for us. By importing the ZXing integration classes into our app, we can make user scans easier and focus our development efforts on handling the scan results. In a follow-up series coming soon, we'll develop a book scanning app where we'll build on the app we created in this tutorial. We'll also add support for Google Books API so that we can display information about scanned books.

Starting with Web API in ASP.NET MVC

Web API is the perfect platform for building RESTful applications on the .NET Framework. If you want to build HTTP services that can reach any kind of client, Web API is what you need. Many developers are confused and cannot understand the differences between the usual MVC Controllers and the API controllers in ASP.NET MVC Framework. This post, is the start up post of the blog's Web API series and it's going to show you what you need to create a Web API application from scratch. More specifically we will create a project to see which classes and assemblies are needed to create Web API applications and another one, to demonstrate consuming Web API services. You will need a tool to capture the traffic exchanging each time you consume the service, and Fiddler is my recommendation.

Animating the RadBusyIndicator while the UI thread is frozen

One of the challenges when developing an application is to give visual indication while a long running process is occurring. In Silverlight this can be easily achieved using the RadBusyIndicator control. However, the UI thread sometimes gets frozen. While the UI thread is frozen no control can be animated which means that the RadBusyIndicator's animation will freeze too and this will lead to unpleasant user experience. One of the greatest enhancements introduced with Silverlight 5 was the concept of Composition thread - it allows you to animate certain elements using the GPU instead of the UI thread. This can be pretty useful when you want to show a progress bar while some heavy UI related logic is running.

Restoring NuGet packages for streamlined team workflow

I think NuGet is among one of the best things to come out of the .net open source community. NuGet has seen quite a significant growth in the past couple of years as more and more projects are added to the repository. Add to this the ease of VS Package Manager and you have a streamlined developer experience inside VS. As an indi-developer one might not face that much issues with NuGet packages in a solution because he/she is the only one sharing the code and the fact that all packages reside inside the 'packages' directory of the solution. Even if one is using source control then there is no need for adding binary packages into the repository.
