Advanced Cucumber syntax

A background section in a feature file allows you to specify a set of steps that are common to every scenario in the file. Instead of having to repeat those steps over and over for each scenario, you move them up into a Background: element. You can have a single Background: element per feature file, and it must appear before any of the Scenario: or Scenario Outline: elements. Just like all the other Gherkin elements, you can give it a name, and you have space to put a multiline description before the first step.

VisualStudio Tip: Configure Code Analysis in Visual Studio

I like well-written code, and I especially like it when I've written it. But I don't always live up to my own expectations. So I've used various tools (FxCop, CodeRush, ReSharper) to give me some objective feedback on the quality of my code. Starting with Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft built the latest version of their tools into Visual Studio Professional. From Visual Studio's Analyze menu, you can select Run Code Analysis on individual projects or on your whole solution.

Windows 8 apps: Make your GridView parallactic

Few months ago I wrote a post about a way to apply a parallactic effect to a GridView. Given that I explained the meaning of the "parallactic" term in that post, I assume you already know it. Unfortunately, the solution I explained was based on the use of a ScrollViewer to wrap a GridView. This was because the ScrollViewer exposes the ViewChanged event but the GridView don't. This is a minor issue in some cases, but lot of times the scrolling is not so smooth and fluid as the one of the GridView.

How to set advanced properties for video recording in WP8

Windows Phone 8 provides a robust array of options for video recording, including CaptureSource, VideoCaptureDevice, and AudioVideoCaptureDevice. AudioVideoCaptureDevice was introduced in Windows Phone 8 and provides an extended set of capabilities and improved performance. Moreover, as it is part of the WinPRT API, it is the only interface that can be called from native code. Details can be found here. One of the most exciting features of AudioVideoCaptureDevice is that it provides advanced settings for video recording, such as H.264 encoding level, H.264 encoding profiles, video frame rate, and so on. The full list of supported settings can be found on this MSDN webpage.

How to get the Unique Device ID in WP8 using Oxygene?

In Windows Phone 8, you can easily get the Unique Device ID using the DeviceExtendedProperties.GetValue or DeviceExtendedProperties.TryGetValue method. In order to retrieve the Unique Device ID in Windows Phone, the developer should also include the ID_CAP_IDENTITY_DEVICE capability in the WMAppManifest.xml file. When this is not included, you will receive the following message when trying to executing the code.

NHibernate Made Simple

This article grew out of my frustration trying to get started with NHibernate. It seemed that all the introductory material I found was either very vague or so detailed that I got overwhelmed before getting to first base. What I was looking for was a simple, straightforward tutorial that would get me up to speed on the fundamentals of NHibernate as quickly as possible. I never found it. Hopefully, this article will serve those needs for other people. This article is going to be rather lengthy, but I encourage you to work your way through it. NHibernate is a complex piece of software, with a steep learning curve. This article will flatten the curve from a matter of days or weeks to a matter of a few hours.

Introduction to Partial Methods

Partial methods are a new feature in the .NET programming world. The earlier versions of .NET had partial class, partial structures, partial interface. With the introduction of ".NET Framework 3.0", the partial family gets a new member partial method, which allows to separate method definition and implementation. Partial methods are not really complicated. In this article, I will try to explain the basic rules of partial methods and how simple it is to use partial methods.

Watermark TextBox in Windows Store apps

A common request for WSAs is to add a "watermark" to TextBox entries so users get a hint as to what is expected in the TextBox. You can see this in many Search Charm implementations as it allows a search hint to be provided via the SearchPane.PlaceHolderText property. However, the built-in TextBox in XAML doesn't have this feature (HTML does!).

Solution to TFS Build Error - The Silverlight 4 SDK is not installed

Today while creating my first CI Build definition in the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server, I noticed that, though the Silverlight 5 SDK is installed in the server, I was unable to run the build. It was throwing an error message that says "The Silverlight 4 SDK is not installed". The issue was not actually with the Silverlight SDK and I found the solution after lots of analysis. In this post, I am going to share it so that, if you come across the same issue, it will be helpful. Build Issue I was actually trying to create a build definition to do automated build on each code check-in named as CI build (Continuous Integration) for one of my Silverlight project. When I triggered the build for the first time, I noticed that the build failed as it was unable to detect Silverlight 4 SDK in the server. The Team Foundation Server (TFS) was recently upgraded to TFS 2012 from the TFS 2010 version and the Silverlight 5 SDK was installed earlier prior to TFS...

REST service using ASP.NET Web API and SQL Database

This tutorial shows how to deploy an ASP.NET web application that uses the ASP.NET Web API to a Windows Azure Web Site by using the Publish Web wizard in Visual Studio 2012 or Visual Studio 2012 for Web Express. You can open a Windows Azure account for free, and if you don't already have Visual Studio 2012, the SDK automatically installs Visual Studio 2012 for Web Express. So you can start developing for Windows Azure entirely for free. This tutorial assumes that you have no prior experience using Windows Azure. On completing this tutorial, you'll have a data-driven web application up and running in the cloud and using a cloud database.

Quick Tip: Processing HTML Content in Windows Store Apps

The WebView control allows you to display content from sites in your app using a small window that renders the HTML using the same rendering engine as Internet Explorer. It does have some limitations and most likely if you are providing content in your app, your goal is to augment your app with fresh data rather than try to superimpose a full-blown web application on your own native Windows Store app. Trying to strip down content can be quite cumbersome once you wade through the myriad RegEx expressions or other utilities available. Here's a simple trick that will work with most content-oriented sites like blogs and online magazines. It allows you to get a more basic view of the content and present it without all of the bells and whistles you may end up pulling down with regular content.

Restful WCF services and queuing (MSMQ) in WCF

To demonstrate all these features we will create a sub-system that is usually part of large scale applications. This sub-system has 4 basic components. The first one will simulate an application that when a specific event happens, triggers a call to a WCF Restful service, passing some values through the query string. The second component will be the WCF Restful service, catching the information passed to it's OperationContract through the query string. The same component will write some data based on the retrieved value in a MSMQ. The third component will be another console application which will use multi-threading to read and retrieve specific messages from the previous written queue. The same component will write some data in another queue. The last component will be another WCF service, which is going to use the MsmqIntegrationBinding binding to automatically read second's queue records. I know there are a lot to be seen and create here, but I can assure you it's going to be really interesting. The system we are going to create is illustrated in the following picture.

A Little HTML5: Using JSON and File API to View Starred Google Reader Posts

A couple of months ago, Google announced that it was retiring its web feed reader Google Reader. As a long-time user of the service, I was disappointed. But there are a couple of substitutes out there like Feedly, The Old Reader, NetVibes, etc. Google gives you the option of exporting your data from Reader through Google Takeout. This is where my inspiration for a little project started. When you go through the process to export your data through Takeout, you receive a zip file. It contains an XML file with all of your subscriptions in OPML format, as well as 7 JSON files containing information like your social connections, stories you "liked," stories you shared with others, notes you took about stories, stories that you put in your favorites list, etc. The problem I found is that none of the above mentioned substitutes know what to do with any of these JSON files.
