Android SDK: Build a Speak and Repeat App

The Android platform provides support for both speech recognition and speech synthesis. In this tutorial, we will create a simple Android app which allows the user to speak, attempts to recognize what they say, and then repeats what was recognized back to them using the Text To Speech engine. We will use the same technique for the TTS engine as we did in Android SDK: Using the Text to Speech Engine, so the focus of this tutorial will be on the speech recognition element. Both speech recognition and synthesis are relatively easy to implement on the Android platform, so you should be able to achieve the steps in this tutorial even if you are an Android beginner.

Unity 3D on WinRT and WP soon

With the public beta of Unity 3D 4.2 there is some great stuff coming for Windows Phone 8 and Windows RT. Unity 3D is a great cross platform engine for creating games. It's architecture translates you're game to native calls in C++ on DirectX or OpenGl. You visually design the game and add game logic in your favorite programming language (C#, Javascript or BOO). The designer is available for both Mac and Windows users. You can publish you're games to most major platforms and devices (Xbox 360, PS3, Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, Flash, Facebook).

Displaying PDF files in WindowsStoreApp

Displaying PDF files in a mobile apps is a valid use case and there are many iOS and Android app that do it. WinRT has no APIs for displaying PDF files. The only thing you can do with a PDF in WinRT is to display it in the default PDF viewer app using the Windows.System.Launcher.LaunchFileAsync method. This is typicaly not what you want to do. This method takes the user out of your app and more importantly the PDF can be copied, shared, etc. There are a few 3rd party components for displaying PDF files in Windows Store apps, each has some problems and restrictions.

Fullscreen XNA games on WP8 devices

Microsoft promised that XNA applications built for Windows Phone 7 could be run on Windows Phone 8 devices without recompiling. While binary compatibility is one thing, it doesn't mean that everything will work out of the box. One key issue is the addition of new resolutions for Windows Phone 8 devices. While developers could previously count on only one target resolution - 800x480 pixels, Windows Phone 8 devices come in two additional resolutions: 1280x768 (WXGA) and 1280x720 (also know as 720p). XNA for Windows Phone was built with one limitation - back buffer, the part of the memory that was rendered to and which was then copied on the screen, was limited to maximum resolution of 800x480. This posed no problems for Windows Phone 7 devices and poses no problem for the WVGA (800x480) Windows Phone 8 devices. Things are slightly different for the other two resolutions.

Fixing MVVM Part 1: Commands

As the title implies, I feel that MVVM is good pattern with okay to terrible implementations and even worse guidance. Coming from other platforms to a XAML platform where you need to master MVVM is a daunting task. Everyone who used WPF back in the day went through their own personal MVVM odyssey. We all arrived at very similar places albeit with very different ways of going about things. What follows is just my take.

Creating touch-based rotation in Win8 XAML Store apps

This article illustrates two ways of using touch or mouse input to rotate a UI element in a XAML-based Windows 8 Store app. I'm sharing this code because I believe that the corresponding official MSDN sample is too complex. Don't get me wrong: the Windows 8 gestures sample looks nice and gives a complete overview of all gestures and their mouse equivalent. But it uses three entire classes to do something that you can literally do in three lines of code. In this article, I'll describe the guidelines-compliant way of rotating an element using a two-finger gesture, but I also provide a one-finger alternative. Since not everyone has a touch screen (yet), I also give you two ways for using the mouse to rotate an element. As usual, the article comes with a downloadable sample app. It just displays two round rotatable images.

What does the LayoutAwarePage Class provide?

In this post I'm going to be discussing what's available in the LayoutAwarePage Class. So First what is that class and how can we get it? The LayoutAwarePage is a class that Microsoft has developed for us in order to help us in handling the applications Navigation, Visual State Switching and Process Lifetime management. You can get this class if you started developing a windows 8 application and choose either the Grid App template or the Split App template. On the other hand if you started a Blank template you can add that class later on by selecting the add a basic page option instead of the blank page, this option will prompt you that It will need additional classes and ask you if visual studio should add them automatically, if you press yes they will be added automatically for you.

Getting IP address of client in Silverlight

The one thing that I have been searching so far is how to get IP address of the client in my application. I want to keep track on where a particular application, that I have created is being used. Well this is important, I think there are some girls who are using my applications and this is the best way to hunt them all down. It was long search though, to find the answer, a perfect answer. But in the end I am writing it all down. Hell Yeah!!! So to begin with, we need to write some JavaScript, my love. Let us create a new application, a silverlight application to rehearse the methodology of getting IP address. Add the following script block anywhere in the aspx page of your project.

Easily create a Modern UI with RadControls for WPF using RadTileList

Telerik's RadControls for WPF and Silverlight recently released a new control in Q1 2013 called RadTileList. Simply put, if you want to achieve the Modern UI Style for your XAML applications (WPF & Silverlight), similar to the start menu screen of Windows 8, then RadTileList has you covered. It displays tiles in a mosaic manner and allows the end-user the ability to smoothly scroll left or right with a gesture, or they can be reordered by using drag and drop just like in Windows 8. You can use RadTileList with a touch screen monitor as well as a mouse without forcing your users to upgrade to a new OS. Before jumping in, you may want to download a trial of RadControls for WPF or Silverlight. The source code is also available here.

Using the Microsoft Lync Client SDK – Part 1

For people unaware, Microsoft Lync is the new name for Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS). In the past couple months I've been working with the Lync Client SDK to build client experiences on top of the recently released Lync Server RC and Lync Client SDK RC. I'm going to go through what is available to you in the Client SDK. The Client SDK allows you to integrate client functionality like messaging, presence, voice, video and automation into your applications. It can be as simple as showing a users presence status in your application to being a full communicator-like experience that you can customize yourself. I'm going to discuss the high level out-of-the-box functionality the SDK provides, the differences from the Communicator 2007 SDK as well as what UI Suppression mode is and what it means to you and how you decide to integrate with Lync Client (more on that later).

Faster Databinding in WPF and Silverlight using OptimizedObservableCollection

ObservableCollection is a core piece to most WPF or Silverlight applications. It aligns perfectly with the MVVM pattern that is very popular in XAML based applications these days. For example binding a ListBox's ItemsSource to an ObservableCollection give's the WPF or Silverlight databinding engine the ability to listen to the change events that ObservableCollection offers whenever an item is added or removed to the list. This makes it very simple for the developer, in their ViewModel they just add or remove items as they wish and the UI updates itself. Magical!

ANONYMOUS IMAGE FILE UPLOAD IN IOS WITH IMGUR

It seems like a pretty useful feature, anonymous image file upload in iOS with imgur. If you need to upload images and don't want to fool with some authentication mess like OAuth this technique is perfect. There are libraries that have simplified the OAuth process, however, it's nice to be able to just initiate an upload, get a result URL back and be on your way. No fuss, no muss. That's what I was looking for, so I wrote a little app that demonstrates how to do exactly that.

Send SMS from App using Email to SMS Gateway

Want to send SMS to a mobile phone from your app. Don't have an SMS API that you can use? We can Email to SMS Gateway approach instead. Basically almost all the telephone carries generally expose an Email to SMS service where in if you send an email to a specified address with MDN (10 digit Mobile Number) it will in turn convert into an SMS and send it to the phone. Doing so does not require any special SMS API but need to program to an API that will send an email with phone no. is all that will be required. There is no cost or authentication required for sending the message as an email, however when it goes as an SMS to the phone, the receiver may be charged based on his/her plan with carrier. Also from a logic perspective in your app, you may have to ask the user their telephone provider or recipient provider in order to pick the right email address to send it to.
