TilePanel - An alternative to the WrapPanel

The TilePanel is a WPF Panel similar to a WrapPanel that wraps its content by placing the items at the topmost position in the control. This is useful when displaying a collection of different sized objects and the collection order is not important. The Panel also respects the Orientation property for wrapping either horizontally or vertically.

An Overview on Many Terms and Principles

I see many articles talking about loose-coupling, many times also talking about interface implementation instead of class inheritance or simple saying that the right thing to do is to follow the open-closed principle.

Usually those terms are related, but in many places they seem to be the same thing, so I decided to write an article about what each term means, giving explanation to help differenciate and relate them.

Partial View in MVC

Partial View allow us to put HTML and C# code into a file that we can reuse across multiple other views. This is very useful when you work on a large application. Assume we have following peace of code that we would like to make reusable for other views. We will extract above marked code and paste it in a new 'partial view' and then we'll just call that 'partial view' from this foreach..

Silverlight 4 enables CommandBinding by using properties like Command and CommandParameter only for Button Base Class which means that CommandBinding can only support those elements in Silverlight which are derived from Button Base Class and will be executing only by Click event.  For e.g., button, Hyperlink Button, Repeat Button, menu controls etc. (N.B. In the previous version of Silverlight 4 CommandBinding was not possible).

Getting Started as an iOS Developer

It seems everyone has an idea for an app, be it a game, a booklet, a coffee app – the world isn't short on people who have an idea for an iPhone or iPad app but simply have no idea where to start. As much as they'd love to make their idea a reality, they can't because they simply have no idea where to get started. The world of iOS development, even to the seasoned developer, can be daunting and somewhat overwhelming and the purpose of this article is to introduce the reader in a less intimidating way.

First things first, this article assumes you have no knowledge of how to become and iPhone or iPad developer and assumes you also have no programming knowledge (though some programming knowledge would be a bonus) – if you fall into that somewhat vague criteria and want to get an app from a bundle inside your head to working app on the App Store, this article is indeed for you!

The very first thing you have to do if you're planning on doing any iOS application development is to register with Apple as a developer – by registering as a developer, you get access to the software development kit (Xcode and Tools) as well as a whole range of technical documents that will become your best friend throughout your development career. You will also get a shed-load of sample code that you're allowed to use in your app, courtesy of Apple.

Enhancing a Photo App with GPUImage & iCarousel in iPhone

This tutorial builds on a previous post entitled "Build a Photo App with GPUImage". The previous lesson demonstrated how to use UIImagePickerController to select photos from the device's photo album or camera, how to add the GPUImage library to your project, and how to use the GPUImageFilter class to enhance still camera frames. If you're already familiar with UIImagePickerController and can figure out how to add GPUImage to your project on your own, you should be able to pick up from where the last tutorial left off just fine.

How to open Internet Explorer by code in a Metro style application

Recently I've worked on a Windows 8 application to promote my blog: people can use it to read my posts within the application and to be notified (using both toast and tile notifications) every time a new post is published. The application uses a web view to display the detail of a post: the problem came when I had to manage the snapped view, since there isn't enough space on screen to display a web view.

During the pre certification lab that I've attended in Microsoft Italy the trainer gave me a good tip: in case the application is snapped, the post detail should be opened using Internet Explorer and not inside the application. In fact, in this scenario, Internet Explorer will open in filled mode and the user will be able to read the post without any difficulty.
